Honestly, just watch 'Lonesome Dove'. The miniseries is a masterpiece. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are perfect. Then maybe 'The Last Picture Show' for its black-and-white cinematography and haunting atmosphere. 'Terms of Endearment' is a classic, though it feels a bit dated in its humor to me now. 'Brokeback Mountain' is, of course, heartbreakingly beautiful. The other TV movies and sequels are for completists only—they lack the magic of the original miniseries. McMurtry's world is so rich that even the lesser adaptations have moments worth seeing, but your time is best spent on those four major pieces.

Does anyone else get overwhelmed trying to choose where to start? There's just so much. Epic Westerns, intimate dramas, romantic tragedies... maybe just pick the one whose poster or description speaks to you. They're all connected by quality writing and deep character work, so you can't really go wrong. Start with 'The Last Picture Show' if you like bleak, beautiful coming-of-age stories. Start with 'Lonesome Dove' if you want an epic adventure. Start with 'Terms of Endearment' if you want a family drama with humor and heart. They're all entry points to the same brilliant mind.

What defines a 'major' adaptation, though? Box office? Awards? Cultural footprint? By any measure, 'Terms of Endearment', 'Brokeback Mountain', 'The Last Picture Show', and the 'Lonesome Dove' miniseries are major. 'Hud' is a major critical success. The TV sequels like 'Streets of Laredo' were major in terms of TV event status in the '90s. So the list is pretty substantial. It's not just one or two lucky breaks; it's a sustained history of Hollywood seeing the potential in his stories. That's a legacy any writer would envy.

Looking to get over a betrayal and layoff, Everest Prue Camara goes to the small town of Lucerne-Alpane County to find recluse, and hopefully, discover a new passion. When fate puts her up as a neighbour with a single father, Everest is determined to not fall for the handsome rancher. Especially not when his six-year-old had wormed her way up her heart already.
Mentor Gayle Calloway Jr. had always thought he was doing okay. His ranch was turning out very well over the years, Lucerne-Alpane was paradise to him and his daughter was fine, so what else could he need? The arrival of a new neighbour up the road puts the rancher's whole belief into question when he starts having feelings for her, to his annoyance.
Everest has to make the choice of succumbing to her needs and risk toying with his heart, or steering clear till her recluse was over. Mentor finds it equally hard giving in to his own passion, especially having sworn off women. Will both of them relent and find solace in each other? Especially when at play is The Rancher's Heart?
I was supposed to disappear. Slip into a forgettable little town, stitch myself back together, and never trust a man again. I had a plan, a fake name, and a bruised heart too raw to feel anything. Then Colt Mercer looked at me from across the bar, and every single plan I ever made went up in smoke.
He is everything I should run from. Tattooed, dangerous, and commanding, Colt is the President of the Iron Vow Motorcycle Club and, by day, one of the most powerful billionaires in the country. He built his empire from nothing and buried anyone who tried to take it. He does not ask. He does not negotiate. He claims.
And the moment I walked into his bar, he claimed me.
But I am hiding a secret that could destroy us both, and the man who broke me in the first place has sent someone to bring me back dead or alive. Colt says he will burn the world before he lets anyone touch me. The problem is, I am starting to believe him.
Because falling for an outlaw king was never supposed to feel this much like coming home.

Honestly, just look at the covers in a used bookstore and pick the one whose title or worn-out spine speaks to you. 'All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers' is a great title, right? That's how I chose my first McMurtry. There's something to be said for a random, serendipitous entry into an author's world. It feels less like homework and more like an adventure.
Look at his portraits of marriage. In 'Duane's Depressed', a man's quiet midlife crisis is rendered with such patience and absurdity. In 'The Last Picture Show', you see young, desperate couplings. His style treats relationships as ongoing negotiations, rarely sources of pure bliss.
The essential book might be the one where you see a relationship dynamic that mirrors something you recognize. That's where his style stops being 'writing' and starts feeling like truth.
What struck me about 'Leaving Cheyenne' was the language. The dialogue has this ragged, authentic cadence that you hear in rural Texas. It’s not over-written or folksy; it’s sparse and direct, carrying a lot of emotion in what’s left unsaid. The small-town life here is communicated through how people talk to each other—the brevity, the humor, the occasional raw outburst. The setting isn't described as much as it is inferred from the characters' rhythms and priorities, which makes it feel incredibly lived-in.
