Walking one of Prague's ghost tours? It's usually led by a live guide — often someone who loves storytelling as much as history. In my experience the guides are local storytellers or licensed guides who dress up a bit, sometimes playing a medieval night watchman, an executioner, or a mysterious alchemist. They weave archival facts with folklore, so you get both bona fide history and the deliciously creepy legends that cling to the Old Town's narrow lanes.
I joined a small group once on a rainy evening and the guide's theatrical delivery made all the difference: they knew the street names, could point out architectural details, and slipped in old court records or guild gossip between spooky tales. If you care about accuracy, ask whether the leader is a licensed Prague guide or has backgrounds in history or theatre. If you want atmosphere, ask for a costumed storyteller and a smaller group — it's a lot more fun when you can hear every whispered line.
I usually end up on a ghost walk led by a local storyteller who knows Prague's alleys and old records. The person leading is often a licensed guide or an actor-type who loves dramatizing the darker side of history. I once followed a guide who narrated an executioner's route while pointing to tiny architectural details I would otherwise have missed.
For a better experience I check reviews to find guides praised for both knowledge and performance. If you're after strict history, ask whether the guide is certified; if you want the chills, pick a costumed storyteller — both can be enjoyable in different ways.
I've found that most historical ghost walks in Prague are run by local guides who combine folklore with historical context. Speaking from a few tours I've taken, the leader tends to be someone with a strong knowledge of the city's past — sometimes a trained guide, sometimes an actor or a passionate local who learned the stories from older residents. They’ll point out real historical sites, like where executions or plague burials once happened, and then layer in the legends that make the night feel spectral.
When choosing a tour, I usually check reviews to see if people mentioned the guide by name and whether they enjoyed the balance of fact and fiction. If you want more historical depth, look for guides who advertise themselves as historians or licensed guides; if you want atmosphere, pick a company that uses costuming and sound effects.
Who leads them? In my travels around Prague I noticed a pattern: the ghost walk is almost always led by a single storyteller-guide who mixes documented history with local legend, and they tend to have a theatrical flair. One night the leader opened with a dramatic bell toll imitation and later showed us a faded inscription no guidebook mentioned — clearly someone who walked these streets a lot. Their roles vary; one guide leaned into scholarly notes, citing dates and sources, while another leaned into character, narrating as if they were a watchman from the 1600s.
Practical tip from me: ask about the group size and language before booking. Some guides are multilingual, others do an English-only stroll full of jokes and dramatized ghost voices. I prefer a guide who can balance facts — like plague records or guild disputes — with spine-tingling lore. That mix keeps the night memorable rather than just another touristy stroll.

I stared wide-eyed at the body in front of me.
A girl.
She was probably at seventeen years old wearing a school uniform.
Like what I wear.
Her body is contorted in an angle I couldn't quite describe but I know would be painful. Her face is covered with her long dry hair and her own blood.
The thing that made me wide-eyed is....
I am that girl.

I found an old quill in an antique shop and decided to buy it since I have always wanted to write with quills. However, as soon as I touched the quill to the paper, I was transported into the book. I wasn't the only one there, though three males who always hide their identities behind masks were in the book with me. They claim the quill belongs to them, and I must return it. Since I refuse, they follow me into every book I go into. One day, I was debating which of my mature books to write when I accidentally spilled the ink onto my book, 1001 Dark Tales. The only way they'll help me out of the book is if I give the quill back, and there is now a fourth. As I go through more of the book with them, I start noticing things. Things I had never planned for in my book, and it concerned me because even though I hadn't written those parts yet, none of the other stories I had used the quill on had ever gone that off track. However, when we tried to leave the book, it wouldn't let us back out. It seems we're stuck in the book until we finish all 1001 Dark Tales.
