I'm just waiting to see if anyone has a magical third option nobody's thought of. Seems not. It's buy or borrow. I'm team borrow-first. It's made me a more patient reader, and I've discovered so many other books while waiting for my holds. The library's recommendation algorithm is surprisingly good.
If I absolutely love a book I borrowed, I sometimes buy a copy later to support the author. That's my personal system. For 'If He Had Been With Me,' I borrowed it, loved it, and then bought the paperback for my shelf.

Wait, does Spotify have it? I know they've been adding audiobooks for Premium users, but their catalog is still growing. I just searched in my Spotify app, and I'm not seeing 'If He Had Been With Me' at the moment. So, for now, that's not a viable source. Maybe in the future.
Stick to the established book platforms. It's a bit frustrating that audiobooks are so siloed, but that's the market. Libby is the hero here for free access. The app even lets you adjust the narration speed, which is a feature I use all the time.

When the devil disguised as Tristan Hale offers desperate Andrea a one-year contract to be his, under his rules, in his bed, with no love, no promises, and no future... she accepts, hoping to clear her family’s crushing debt and save her brother’s life. But what happens when pretending starts to feel real, when survival turns into burning desire, and when the man who was never meant to keep her becomes the one she cannot walk away from?
She thought she was just a contract wife, a convenient arrangement to keep his reputation spotless and his empire stable.
But when Duke Austen’s billion-dollar empire begins to crumble, he turns to her, the woman he once treated like a business deal, and suddenly, his coldness melts into obsession. He protects her like she’s his only weakness, kisses her like he’s afraid to lose her, and holds her like she’s the only thing keeping him alive.
Until she discovers the truth.
She was never just his contract wife.
She’s been his real wife all along.
And she’s the only one who didn’t know.
Now, between love, lies, and a hidden marriage certificate that could destroy everything, she must decide if she will
fight for the man who deceived her, or finally walk away as the woman he can never own?
At 23, Emilia Jones signed a contract that made her Billionaire Steven Riorsorn’s secret mistress because she was blinded by a teenage crush and had the hope that one day she would be more than a secret.
Then his ex-girlfriend returned, and Steven ended everything with barely a goodbye.
Heartbroken and pregnant, Emilia disappears to rebuild her life. She won't be anyone's second choice ever again.
Two years later, she's a rising force in the business world, with a daughter Steven doesn't know exists. But when their paths cross at a corporate event, the past comes crashing back.
Steven wants answers. His ex wants him back. And a dangerous enemy wants to destroy them all.
This time, Emilia isn’t fighting for love. She is fighting for her daughter, her future and the woman she had worked hard to become.
But what happens when the man who broke her heart finally realises what he lost?
As if my life wasn’t already complicated as a plus size woman who has always found it hard to find love, I go and fall in love with the wrong man.
Stanley Pearson is my father's best friend. A billionaire. Twenty-nine years older than me. Engaged to my high school bully. And.. the only man I've ever truly loved.
For years, my feelings were nothing more than a secret crush I swore I'd outgrow. Then my parents left for a three-year overseas assignment and asked Stanley to let me stay at his estate until I finish college.
Now, I'm living under the same roof as the man I can't stop thinking about. Every day, I tell myself to keep my distance. Every day, I fail.
Behind his cold, untouchable exterior is a man carrying dangerous secrets. The closer we become, the harder it is to deny the undeniable pull between us. Soon, we're risking everything for a love that should never exist.
But love isn't the only thing lurking in the shadows. Someone is determined to destroy Stanley's empire.
The people he trusts are hiding devastating betrayals.
And the only way to save everything he's built may be to sacrifice the woman he loves.
Heartbroken, I find an unlikely ally in Stanley's greatest rival... only to discover that everyone has secrets, everyone has an agenda, and some betrayals cut deeper than love itself.
Now I'm caught between two powerful men, a web of lies, and a love that refuses to die.
They say forbidden love is dangerous. No one warned me it could destroy us all.
Check out the app 'Libby' and see if your library card works. If you don't have a card, you can usually sign up for one online in minutes if you live in the library's service area. It's the easiest free method. The collection is vast, and the holds system, while sometimes slow, is fair.
Librarians are actively buying digital copies based on demand. Putting a hold on a book signals to them that patrons want it. You're not just borrowing; you're voting with your hold for what the library should stock next.
I'm waiting for my hold on Libby. Four more weeks to go! The anticipation is part of the fun, I guess. Everyone says the audio is devastating, so I'm mentally preparing myself. I'll probably listen to it all in one weekend.
I see this question pop up every few months in the bookish corners of TikTok. The answer is always the same: nope, no unabridged. It's become a sort of in-joke—'join the club waiting for the full audio.' We all just collectively sigh and recommend the print version. It's a bit of a shame, but it also makes the physical book feel that much more special and intimate.
I get the appeal of wanting it in a subscription. There's a psychological freedom in knowing you can stop listening without feeling you've wasted money. If you're unsure about the story or the narration style, that safety net is valuable.
Without it, you're taking a $15+ risk. My suggestion: read a detailed summary or a few in-depth reviews of the book's plot and themes. If it still sounds like something you'll connect with, the risk is lower. The book has a very specific, melancholic vibe—make sure that's what you're in the mood for before spending the credit.
