As a competitive battler, I’ve bred so many Alolan Vulpix that I could recite its level-up moves in my sleep. Aurora Veil unlocks at 42, but here’s the thing: most trainers evolve it into Ninetales earlier (level 36 with a Fire Stone). Ninetales learns the move at the same level, but its higher speed and Snow Warning ability make it the better user. Still, there’s charm in keeping Vulpix unevolved—its adorable animations make grinding those extra levels feel less tedious.
42! Same answer as the meaning of life, coincidentally. My kid’s Alolan Vulpix hit that level during our playthrough, and she gasped when the ‘pretty shield move’ popped up. We tested it against Totem Kommo-o, and it saved our team. Now she insists all her Vulpix must learn it—no exceptions. Parenting win: turning level-up trivia into core memories.
Level 42! That’s when my Alolan Vulpix finally got Aurora Veil during my 'Ultra Moon' run. I remember grinding near Mount Lanakila, impatiently checking every level-up. The payoff was worth it though—this move is a game-changer for doubles or solo runs. It’s like having Light Screen and Reflect rolled into one, and with Ninetales’ Snow Warning, it’s basically free setup. Pro tip: Teach it Blizzard via TM around the same time for a killer combo.
I was just replaying 'Pokémon Sun' the other day and noticed how Alolan Vulpix's moveset differs from the classic version. This icy little fox learns Aurora Veil at level 42, which feels like a perfect midpoint—strong enough to justify the wait but not so late that it's useless in a playthrough. The move's dual defense boost is clutch for tougher battles, especially since Alolan Vulpix isn’t the tankiest Pokémon out there.
What’s cool is how this ties into its lore too. Aurora Veil mirrors the northern lights phenomenon, which fits Alola’s tropical-but-mystical vibe. I always pair it with Hail or Snow Warning to activate the effect instantly. Makes me wish more Pokémon had access to this move—it’s such a stylish way to turn the tide in battles.

Man, figuring out how to evolve Alolan Vulpix in 'Pokémon Sun and Moon' was such a fun little puzzle when I first played! Unlike regular Vulpix, which evolves with a Fire Stone, the Alolan variant needs an Ice Stone—a nice twist that fits its icy redesign. You can find Ice Stones in Po Town or by digging with Tauros in Poni Wilds, but I had the best luck with the Po Town one. Just give it to your Vulpix, and boom—beautiful Alolan Ninetales!
What I love about this is how it reflects the regional variant theme. Alolan Vulpix isn’t just a palette swap; its evolution method ties into its new Ice typing. Plus, Ninetales’ design is gorgeous, with that ethereal icy fluff. I spent way too long admiring mine in Amie after evolving it. Worth every second of searching for that stone!
