But because the series is long, the 'misunderstanding' isn't flimsy; it's often a legitimately awful-looking action based on incomplete information. The tension comes from the reader knowing more than one or both characters, and watching them struggle in the dark. The eventual clearing of the air is so cathartic because it was so hard-won.
