Smollett’s novel is a wild ride, and its characters are a big part of why. Peregrine starts off as this arrogant young man, but his misadventures—scams, failed romances, even jail time—slowly chip away at his ego. Commodore Trunnion, though? Zero growth, and that’s why he’s perfect. The man’s a walking meme, shouting nautical curses and treating his house like a ship. Emilia’s the grounded one, though she’s not just there to be 'the sensible girl'—she calls Peregrine out when he deserves it. And you’ve got villains like Cadwallader Crabtree, who’s basically an 18th-century troll. The whole cast feels like they’ve stumbled out of a particularly rowdy tavern and into literature.

The main characters in 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle' are a colorful bunch, each bringing their own quirks to Tobias Smollett's 18th-century romp. Peregrine himself is the ambitious, sometimes reckless protagonist—a young man with a sharp wit and a tendency to stir up trouble. His loyal but naive friend, Emilia Gauntlet, adds heart to the story, while the eccentric Commodore Trunnion steals every scene with his gruff sea-dog charm. Then there’s Peregrine’s scheming uncle, Mr. Pickle, whose antics drive much of the plot. The novel’s supporting cast, like the perpetually unlucky Lieutenant Hatchway, rounds out this chaotic, satirical world.

What I love about these characters is how Smollett throws them into absurd situations—duels, disguises, even a mock funeral—yet manages to make them feel oddly human. Peregrine’s growth from a brash youth to someone wiser (though not entirely reformed) is particularly satisfying. And Trunnion? Absolute legend. His obsession with naval jargon and his crumbling 'garrison' of a house had me laughing out loud. If you enjoy picaresque novels with larger-than-life personalities, this one’s a gem.

Peregrine Pickle’s cast reads like a chaotic party guest list. There’s the titular hero, whose antics range from clever to downright cruel; his salty mentor, Commodore Trunnion; and a parade of schemers, fools, and oddballs. Even the minor characters—like the bumbling Doctor or Peregrine’s long-suffering servants—have these vivid little arcs. It’s the kind of book where everyone’s either plotting or getting pranked, and half the fun is seeing how their personalities clash.

Peregrine Pickle is the star, of course—a clever, impulsive guy who’s either charming or infuriating depending on the chapter. But the real scene-stealer for me is Commodore Hawser Trunnion, this old sailor who talks like he’s still at sea ('damn my eyes!' and all that). He lives in a house he calls a 'garrison,' and his whole personality is like a parody of naval life. Then there’s Peregrine’s love interest, Emilia, who’s sweet but gets dragged into his nonsense. The book’s packed with side characters too, like the greedy Mr. Pickle and the long-suffering Lieutenant Hatchway. It’s the kind of novel where even minor figures leave an impression—like that one surgeon who keeps showing up at the worst possible moments.

Who are the main characters in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children?

The main characters in 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' are such a colorful bunch, each with their own quirks that make the story unforgettable. Jacob Portman is our protagonist, an ordinary kid who discovers his grandfather's wild stories about peculiar children are actually true. Then there's Miss Peregrine herself, the stern yet caring headmistress who can turn into a bird and manages a time loop to protect her wards. The peculiar kids include Emma, who can create fire with her hands, Millard, an invisible boy who's always sneaking around, and Bronwyn, whose super strength comes in handy more often than not. Other standout characters are Olive, who floats unless weighted down, and Hugh, who has bees living inside him. Enoch can reanimate dead things, which is as creepy as it sounds, and Fiona has a way with plants that’s downright magical. The villain, Barron, is a hollowgast disguised as a human, hunting peculiars for their eyes. What I love about this cast is how their peculiarities aren’t just gimmicks—they shape their personalities and struggles. Ransom Riggs did a fantastic job making each one feel real, flaws and all.
