The main characters in 'The Infernal Devices' are truly fascinating. There’s Tessa Gray, who is on a quest that pulls her right into the Shadowhunter world—her shapeshifting ability really sets her apart. Then there's Will Herondale, the charismatic but tortured Shadowhunter who keeps everyone guessing about his past. Not to mention Jem Carstairs, Will's best friend and parabatai, who has his own struggles but is a real light in the story.
Their interactions are layered, filled with humor, angst, and genuine warmth. Each character adds a unique flavor to the story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. I just love how they evolve and grow throughout the series, dealing with their relationships and the heavy expectations placed on them. These characters have stuck with me long after I closed the book!
Jem Carstairs, Tessa Gray, and Will Herondale are the beating hearts of 'The Infernal Devices.' Starting with Tessa, her arrival in London marks the beginning of an awesome adventure. She’s not just some typical damsel; her shape-shifting abilities make her super unique and instrumental in the plot. Then there’s Will, often portrayed as the tortured hero hiding behind his witty banter and a broody exterior, which only adds depth to his character. And we can’t overlook Jem, with his kind-hearted spirit and tragic affliction. The bond of brotherhood between Jem and Will is so relatable, making their journey together even more touching. You can feel their struggles and the weight they carry.
The love triangle they form adds an extra layer of tension and drama. It’s fascinating to see how Clare develops their relationships, exploring themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice. As the story unfolds, you can't help but root for each of them in their battles, both external and internal. It’s these rich character dynamics that really elevate the series and make it unforgettable for fans.
In the world of Cassandra Clare's 'The Infernal Devices,' a rich tapestry of characters unfolds that really brings the narrative to life. The story primarily follows Tessa Gray, a young woman who arrives in Victorian London in search of her missing brother. Tessa is unique; she has the rare ability to shapeshift into anyone she touches, which adds an intriguing layer to her character. Her charm and determination shine through as she navigates an utterly foreign world filled with Shadowhunters and other supernatural beings.
Then we have Will Herondale, the brooding and enigmatic Shadowhunter who swoops into Tessa's life. Will is a character steeped in tragedy and mystery, with a dark past that makes him both tortured and captivating. The way his relationship with Tessa develops is beautifully tailored, oscillating between passion and heartbreak. And of course, we can't forget Jem Carstairs, Will’s parabatai. Jem, with his kind soul and delicate nature, often serves as the emotional anchor in the story, representing both friendship and sacrifice.
The dynamics between these three form the emotional core of the series, encapsulating love, friendship, and loyalty amid supernatural chaos. Each character grows immensely, facing doubts, fears, and the struggles of their intertwined destinies. Clare's vivid storytelling weaves their fates together, leaving a lasting impact that echoes through the entire trilogy.

Isadora didn’t want to come to Ashwyck Academy.
It wasn’t the haunting towers or the iron gates that unnerved her. It wasn’t the students—dark, beautiful, terrifying things cloaked in magic and menace. It was what it meant.
Coming here was a last resort. A whispered admission from her parents that something was wrong with her. That despite being born of a temptress and a mind-bending killer, despite all the bloodlines and rituals and whispered prophecies—Isadora was still painfully, tragically human.
She was quiet, clever, and careful. Not powerful. Not wicked. Not like the others.
Her parents called it “late blooming.” The High Table called it “defective.” But no one said it out loud. Instead, they tucked her into Ashwyck like a final gamble and hoped the academy could awaken whatever dark inheritance slumbered beneath her skin.
She hadn’t wanted to come. She still doesn’t belong.
But Ashwyck has its own secrets.
And Isadora is about to discover that the parts of her she’s most afraid of are the ones they’ve been waiting for.

"You don't belong here."
The people I believed I could trust threw those comments at me, and they rang in my ears for years. My foes, my packmates, and my tormentors are Cassian and Kade. They turned every action I took into something improper and out of character, making my life a living misery. And perhaps I did believe them for a while.
But when I turn 19, everything is different. My abilities come to life, more potent and terrifying than I could have ever dreamed. All of a sudden, they are pulled to me as my destined partners rather than as adversaries.
The icy Alpha-in-waiting Cassian is troubled by the thought of his future. The vicious Beta Kade is constantly engaged in a game of control and domination. Then there is Alaric, the enigmatic outsider with a secret that has the potential to ruin us all.
Destiny created our unshakable bond, but I never wanted to be a pawn in someone else's game. I'm becoming more and more aware that nothing is as it seems. I am at the center of several mysteries that are deeply ingrained in the history of our pack.
It's this bond that I wish to resist. I want to despise everyone. However, there is no denying the draw between us. I feel like my heart and soul are breaking apart piece by piece with every touch and look.
As the full moon rises, I find myself standing on the edge of all my fears. Then I hear it—the one fact for which I could have been unprepared.
"Tonight, one of you will pass away."

I get a little wistful thinking about the toll of the fight at the end of 'The Infernal Devices' — there are definitely some proper losses that sting. The big, named deaths I always come back to are Mortmain (the Magister himself) and a handful of Institute figures who don't make it through the final confrontations. Charlotte Branwell and Henry Branwell both die during the course of the trilogy's climax: their leadership and inventions come with a heavy cost. Jessamine Lovelace is another named casualty — she leaves and then her story ends tragically in the books.
Beyond those headline names, there are a number of lesser Shadowhunters and mundanes who die in battles or as collateral damage from automatons and schemes. One thing I like to point out in conversations is that Jem doesn’t exactly die in the conventional sense — he becomes a Silent Brother, which is effectively the end of his old life even as he continues in another form. Tessa and Will survive, though their futures are complicated, and that complexity is part of why the deaths feel meaningful rather than gratuitous.
In 'The Infernal Devices' series, a gripping blend of fantasy and romance unfolds in Victorian London, and there’s no shortage of memorable characters that truly bring the story to life. First, we have Tessa Gray, whose unique ability to transform into any person she touches sets her apart in the Shadowhunter world. This power often leads her on an emotional roller coaster as she grapples with her own identity while trying to find her place in a society that views her abilities with suspicion.
Then, there’s Will Herondale, the charming yet tormented Shadowhunter with a dark past that adds depth to his character. His fierce loyalty and courageous spirit make him incredibly captivating, and watching his relationship with Tessa evolve is a highlight of the series. The tension between Will and his best friend, Jem Carstairs – whose own struggles with a magical illness present a poignant contrast – creates a beautiful but heartbreaking love triangle.
Speaking of Jem, he’s a total gem! The way he balances strength and tenderness is inspiring. A skilled warrior with a deep appreciation for music and poetry, Jem often represents a more solemn, introspective side of the hero archetype, which complements Will’s brashness. Together, they navigate friendships and rivalries that challenge their ideals, making them unforgettable. Each character's journey interweaves with the series' themes of love, sacrifice, and the search for belonging, immersing readers in their world.
