By the final act the relationships feel earned, the betrayals sting, and the quieter moments — like Maya teaching Lena how to shoot or Ana refusing to compromise her badge — linger with you. I closed the book thinking about how much I cared for these people, which is the mark of a novel that truly hooked me.
