Mick & Liz, Gavin & Tara, Luke & Savannah, Cole & Cassidy. That's the first four books. Then it expands to their friends, teammates, and family. Later books focus on the Rileys and other sports like racing or soccer. The Brady brothers are the heart of it for me. Liz is a force of nature, frankly.
Really? Feels like that list is missing a key feature: they're nearly all Brady men, but the women drive half the series. Like, Liz is the athlete in the first book, not Mick! The family just expands and branches. I'd say the core is the three Brady brothers – Mick, Gavin, and Luke – and their cousin Cole, because the initial books stick with them. Later on you get the Rileys (Molly and Jenna's families) and the Andersons, so the cast balloons. Honestly, after book ten or so, I get names mixed up unless a plot really sticks.
But the recurring characters beyond the players are just as vital. The team owner Frank Riley, his daughters, the sports agents... The series works because it's a whole ecosystem, not just a rotating roster of hot athletes. It's why I kept reading; you check in on old favorites when new couples pop up. Tara's still my favorite lead, though.
I always think of it in waves. First wave: The Bradys. Mick, Liz, Gavin, Tara, Luke, Savannah, and Cole. That's the solid foundation. Second wave: The Rileys. Molly, Ty, Jenna, Cash... they pull the team ownership side front and center. Third wave: The Andersons and beyond, diving into other sports. So the 'main' cast shifts, but the Brady patriarch and matriarch are the anchors everything else ties back to.
The books are less about any single character and more about the network. A new book means a new couple, but a wedding or a holiday gathering will have a dozen previous leads in the background. It's cozy in that sense, even with all the steam. You're following a community.

From New York Times bestselling author Krista Lakes comes this sexy story of sports romance!
especially those with a baseball backdrop, I can't get enough of the Brunswick Baseball series. The main characters are a mix of gritty underdogs and charismatic leaders. There's Jake 'The Rake' Thompson, the hotshot pitcher with a troubled past but an arm like a cannon. His best friend and catcher, Mike 'Gears' Rodriguez, is the heart of the team, always keeping morale high with his quick wit and unwavering loyalty. Then there's Coach Hank Brunswick, the gruff but deeply caring mentor who pushes the team to their limits. The series also shines a spotlight on secondary characters like Sarah Jenkins, the determined team manager who proves you don’t need to be on the field to make a difference.
Another standout is Tyler 'Twitch' Morgan, the speedy outfielder with anxiety issues, whose journey resonates with anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider. The novels do a fantastic job of balancing their personal struggles with the high-stakes drama of the games. What I love most is how each character feels real—flawed, relatable, and unforgettable. If you’re into sports stories with heart, this series is a home run.
The 'Play by Play' series by Jaci Burton is packed with steamy romances, and the main couples are what make it so addictive! Let me gush about a few of my favorites. First up, there's Mick Riley and Tara Lincoln from 'The Perfect Play'—total opposites that sizzle together. Mick's this pro football player with a golden heart, and Tara’s a no-nonsense event planner who melts under his charm. Their chemistry is off the charts, and I love how Tara keeps him grounded. Then there's Gavin Riley and Lizzy Darnell from 'Changing the Game'—Gavin’s the bad-boy sports agent, and Lizzy’s the PR rep who’s way too professional to fall for him… until she totally does. Their banter is chef’s kiss.
Another standout is Cole Riley and Savannah Brooks from 'Taking a Shot'—Cole’s the hockey star with a soft spot for Savannah, his best friend’s little sister. The way their friendship turns into something deeper is just swoon. And let’s not forget about Ace Riley and Kelsey Lawler from 'Playing to Win'—he’s a motorcycle-racing rebel, and she’s the corporate exec who’s way out of his league… or so she thinks. Their dynamic is fiery and fun, with just the right amount of emotional depth. Honestly, the Riley family alone could fuel a dozen spin-offs—I’d read every single one!
I think the core dynamic in 'For Love of the Game' hinges on Billy Chapel, the aging pitcher, and Jane Aubrey, his long-time but complicated love. The whole story unfolds during Billy's final perfect game pitch, so a huge chunk of the character exploration is internal—it's Billy wrestling with his own past, his fading skills, and whether baseball was worth the personal cost. Jane's character is mostly built through his memories of their relationship, the fights and the quiet moments, which makes her feel real but also filtered through his nostalgia and regret.
You also have Gus Sinski, the catcher, who acts as Billy's anchor during the game. Their communication is almost telepathic, a partnership built over years. The owner, Gary Wheeler, shows up with the news that's forcing Billy's hand, representing the cold business side of the sport. Honestly, the key characters aren't a large ensemble; it's Billy's psyche, with Jane and Gus as the two poles of his personal and professional life. The tension comes from whether those two worlds can ever reconcile.
