Then you’ve got the Solarians—like Han Fastolfe, the pragmatic scientist who’s caught between cultures, and Gruer, the security chief whose rigid adherence to Solarian customs almost derails the investigation. Asimov doesn’t waste a single character; even minor ones like Baley’s wife Jessie back on Earth add layers to his internal conflict.
Gladia’s my favorite, though. She starts off as this sheltered aristocrat, but her curiosity about Earth and growing rapport with Baley subtly challenge her worldviews. The way Asimov contrasts her artistic sensitivity with the clinical precision of Solarian life is genius.
