26 kids, each with a uniquely grim end tied to their initials—that's 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies' in a nutshell. Gorey's genius lies in making something so grim feel oddly playful. My favorite? 'N is for Neville who died of ennui.' It’s the perfect blend of wit and gloom.

The Gashlycrumb Tinies' is this delightfully macabre little alphabet book by Edward Gorey, where each letter introduces a child meeting a grim fate—dark humor at its finest. I've pored over the pages so many times, partly for the eerie charm and partly because Gorey's art style is just mesmerizing. There are exactly 26 children in it, one for every letter of the alphabet, from 'A is for Amy who fell down the stairs' all the way to 'Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin.' It's like a twisted nursery rhyme collection, and I adore how each vignette is so brief yet vivid.

What really gets me is how Gorey turns something as simple as an ABC book into a gothic masterpiece. The kids' demises range from absurdly tragic to darkly funny, and the illustrations are packed with tiny, eerie details—like the way Zillah's gin bottle gleams ominously. It's not for the faint-hearted, but if you appreciate morbid whimsy, it's a gem. I sometimes flip through it just to admire how much storytelling he crams into such tiny moments.
