Three main live-action Mortal Kombat movies exist—the 1995 classic, its 1997 sequel, and the 2021 reboot. The animated side has been way more active though, with 'Scorpion's Revenge,' 'Battle of the Realms,' and 'Snow Blind' expanding the universe. Personally, I think the animations capture the games' spirit better, especially with their willingness to go full MK-level violent. That 2021 movie had potential, but it felt like it was holding back until that final fight. Maybe the next one will go all out with the tournament structure fans have been begging for.
Man, Mortal Kombat has had quite the rollercoaster ride on the big screen! The first live-action movie dropped back in 1995, and it was this glorious mix of cheesy one-liners and surprisingly decent fight scenes for its time. Then there was the sequel, 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation' in 1997, which... well, let's just say it didn't quite live up to the hype. Fast forward to 2021, and we got that reboot with Lewis Tan, which split fans right down the middle—some loved the fresh take, others missed the campy charm of the original. There's also a bunch of animated films like 'Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge' that dive deeper into the lore. Honestly, as a lifelong fan, I just keep hoping for that perfect adaptation that balances gore, story, and nostalgia.
And let's not forget the web series 'Mortal Kombat: Legacy' from 2011—technically not a movie, but it had some killer fight choreography. The franchise keeps teasing us with rumors about sequels to the 2021 film, but nothing concrete yet. At this point, I'd kill for a properly dark, R-rated tournament arc done right.
Counting Mortal Kombat movies feels like trying to track all the fatalities in the games—messy but fun! The 1995 original holds a special place in my heart; that soundtrack alone still slaps. Then came 'Annihilation,' which was so bad it looped back around to being entertaining. The 2021 reboot had its moments, especially that opening scene with Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion—chills! Outside live-action, the animated movies are where the franchise really flexes its storytelling muscles. 'Scorpion's Revenge' and 'Battle of the Realms' go hard with the brutality while actually developing characters like Sub-Zero beyond just 'ice guy.'
Funny thing is, I always end up rewatching the '95 movie during rainy weekends. There's something about that practical effects Goro and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's Shang Tsung that modern CGI just can't replicate. Here's hoping the next film learns from both the highs and lows of what came before.

Considering all the movies within the 'Dragon Ball' franchise, it adds up to an impressive number! There are numerous films across different series. With the 'Dragon Ball Z' era being particularly prolific, there are 15 movies from that segment alone. Then we have the original 'Dragon Ball' series contributing four films. In addition to that, the more recent 'Dragon Ball Super' introduced three more movies. If I tally them up right, that gives us a grand total of 22 films!
What’s fascinating is how each movie often allows for unique storytelling outside the established canon, giving fans some fresh and exciting takes on their favorite characters. For instance, films like 'Dragon Ball Z: Broly' and 'Dragon Ball Super: Broly' reinvigorated the franchise while reintroducing classic characters in a whole new light.
I'm sure you can agree that the movies have made a significant impact on the fandom. They not only cater to the existing lore but also dive into alternate realities and scenarios providing fans with epic battles and emotional arcs that sometimes even surpass the main series! Can’t wait to see what the creators come up with next!
For me, the best 'Mortal Kombat' game has to be 'Mortal Kombat X.' The combat system feels so fluid, and the introduction of variations for each fighter added a whole new layer of strategy. I spent hours mastering Sub-Zero’s different styles, and the online matches were intense but fair. The story mode was a blast too—seeing the new generation of fighters alongside classic characters made it feel fresh yet nostalgic.
What really sealed the deal for me was the brutalities. They’re like mini fatalities, quick and satisfying, perfect for when you want to show off without a long animation. The graphics were a huge step up, and the roster had a great mix of old and new. Even now, I occasionally boot it up for a few matches, and it still holds up beautifully.
The latest 'Mortal Kombat' movie hit theaters and HBO Max on April 23, 2021. I was hyped for this reboot because I grew up playing the games, and the trailers promised brutal fights and that iconic gore. The director, Simon McQuoid, really leaned into the R-rated vibe, which was a relief after the watered-down 90s versions. Sub-Zero’s ice blades and Scorpion’s spear looked straight out of the game!
Honestly, though, the plot was a bit messy—typical for game adaptations, but the fan service made up for it. That scene where Cole Young unlocks his 'arcana' had me cheering. It’s not a perfect film, but as a longtime fan, I left satisfied. Hope they greenlight that sequel soon!
