Don't sleep on 'Bright Lights, Big Christmas' if you want a seasonal take. It's about a family traveling to sell Christmas trees in a Manhattan neighborhood, which isn't a Southern small town at all. I mention it because it shows how Andrews transplants that close-knit, temporary community feeling into a completely different setting. It proves her skill with 'small town' is more about crafting intimate communities than just geographic location.
Interesting how everyone's picking different ones! I wonder if it depends on what part of the South you're from or familiar with. For someone from the Lowcountry, 'The Weekenders' might feel most authentic, while someone from a Georgia island community might swear by 'The High Tide Club'. Her settings are broad enough to feel universally Southern but detailed enough to spark these kinds of debates.

She left to save herself.
He stayed and became untouchable.
Ten years ago, Sloane Hart fled her Oklahoma hometown with nothing but a suitcase and a broken heart- leaving behind the boy who loved her when she didn’t love herself yet.
Now she’s back. Successful. Beautiful. But still unhealed.
Rhett Whitmere- the man who owns the town, built an empire himself, and never forgave her for leaving without goodbye.
When Rhett and Sloane’s business expansion forces them into a contract neither can walk away from, old wounds rip open… and desire ignites hotter than ever.
The problem?
They’re not the same people anymore. And sometimes, some love stories don’t get second chances- unless they’re brave enough to bleed for them.
I’d actually argue 'Summer Rental' does a better job because it focuses on a group of friends renting a run-down house in the Outer Banks. It’s less about the high society side and more about the lived-in, slightly shabby reality of a beach town. You get the peeling paint, the local dive bar, the quirky neighbors, and that feeling of escape that only a rental by the sea can provide. The small-town dynamics come through in the interactions with shop owners and the sense that everyone knows a little too much about each other's business. It feels authentic, not just picturesque.
The family dynamics are the secret ingredient. Southern charm is deeply familial. The romantic subplot is always bumping up against mother-daughter issues, sibling rivalry, or legacy expectations. The love interest often helps the heroine navigate or heal those family wounds. So the romance isn't just about two people; it's about integrating a new person into a complicated, charming, sometimes maddening family system. The happy ending involves the family approving or accepting the new partner.
Don't start with her latest just because it's new. Go for 'The Weekenders' - it's practically a masterclass in what she does best. A group of friends, a seasonal island setting, old secrets resurfacing... it's all there. The pacing is great for a new reader; it hooks you with the premise of a missing husband right on the first page.
You get family drama, a bit of romance, and a satisfying mystery without anything getting too dark. It's a very accessible entry point that showcases her strengths perfectly.
A tiny tip: some of her older titles were re-released with new covers. If you see a modern-looking cover, it's likely a newer edition of an older book. Don't let that trick you into thinking it's a new story. 'Hissy Fit' from 2004 might have a 2020s cover. The content is the same delightful early-2000s story.
I appreciate that her female leads are usually in their 30s, 40s, or beyond, navigating careers and messy relationships. It's refreshing compared to a lot of YA-centric beach fare. You can relate to the life-stage problems even while you're blissfully detached from your own.
