Gaming tie-in novels can be surprisingly good for this. The 'Warhammer 40,000' books, especially those focusing on the Adeptus Mechanicus, are steeped in a kind of gothic, religious VR—the 'Noosphere' is a data-network that tech-priests perceive directly. It's not recreational; it's holy communion with machine spirits. The blending of mysticism and interface is incredibly unique.
Honestly, half the fun is in the fanfiction for established VR worlds. The 'SAO' (Sword Art Online) fandom has endless AUs and what-ifs exploring the psychological trauma the show glossed over. Same for '.hack//Sign'. People write incredible character studies about being trapped, about forming real bonds in an unreal place, about what you bring back with you. Sometimes the best exploration of a premise happens outside the canon.
I'm skeptical of any book that treats VR as a perfect escape. The interesting ones introduce friction. In 'Agency' by William Gibson, the VR elements are clunky, corporate, and used for mundane work. It feels real because it's not glamorous. In 'The Last Graduate', it's a magical school, but the way the students strategize using magical constructs has that VR guild-raid teamwork vibe. The friction—the rules, the limitations—is what makes the world believable and the struggles meaningful.
Has anyone mentioned 'The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle'? It's a groundhog-day murder mystery where the protagonist wakes up in a different guest's body each day. The whole book is like being forced to replay a level from a new character's POV, gathering intel. It's a brilliant narrative analog for VR or game mechanics—limited agency, predefined roles, an overarching puzzle. The 'simulation' is the premise itself.

But unexpected decisions they made had created unfaithful circumstances that have brought two different individuals together. Next unthinkable move: run as far away from the situation that could have led to their wishes.
They don’t know how they ended up walking together and they don’t know why. But all they want to do is to escape from the environment they were surrounded in. Anya and Sadie thought they would be distant but with every step they took, they started to know so much about each other and what they have one thing in common: they hated how the world has become. But with the world that is against their odds, will they be able to show their truth?
In this first debut comes a coming-of-age story about realizing that in order to survive the world, you must choose whether to follow the rules or break them for the sake of doing something right.
Ten years into the future, people of Earth have become advanced in technology. However, tragedy strikes again, killing millions all over the world. With no vaccine or cure, scientists sought other methods. A well-known scientist, Dayo Johnson, creates the Personifid in Nigeria, providing a chance to live forever in an artificial body. Meanwhile, something much darker is at work. A failed experiment of an old project is on the loose, killing people. Perhaps the New World is not as perfect as it seems.
Her name was Cathedra. Leave her last name blank, if you will.
Where normal people would read, "And they lived happily ever after," at the end of every fairy tale story, she could see something else. Three different things.
Three words: Lies, lies, lies.
A picture that moves.
And a plea: Please tell them the truth.
All her life she dedicated herself to becoming a writer and telling the world what was being shown in that moving picture. To expose the lies in the fairy tales everyone in the world has come to know.
No one believed her. No one ever did.
She was branded as a liar, a freak with too much imagination, and an orphan who only told tall tales to get attention. She was shunned away by society. Loveless. Friendless.
As she wrote "The End" to her novels that contained all she knew about the truth inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, she also decided to end her pathetic life and be free from all the burdens she had to bear alone.
Instead of dying, she found herself blessed with a second life inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, and living the life she wished she had with the characters she considered as the only friends she had in the world she left behind.
Cathedra was happy until she realized that an ominous presence lurks within her stories. One that wanted to kill her to silence the only one who knew the truth.

I read 'Heir Apparent' by Vivian Vande Velde as a kid, and it stuck with me. It's about a girl trapped in a faulty VR arcade game where if she dies, the feedback loop could kill her in real life. She has to win the game to survive. It's a middle-grade/early YA book, so it's straightforward, but the concept of being stuck in a flawed, glitchy system is executed with real tension. A great intro to the stakes of VR for younger readers.
I keep hoping for a novel that does for VR what 'Piranesi' did for a mysterious house. A story completely immersed in exploring and cataloging a beautiful, bizarre, and lonely virtual world for its own sake, with a slow-burn mystery about why it exists. Most VR stories are about escaping it, conquering it, or revealing it as a trap. I want one that treats the VR world as a place of genuine wonder and discovery, where the protagonist's goal is simply to understand its architecture and history. That's my niche desire for worldbuilding.
