Nel libro ci sono pagine di introspezione, monologhi interiori e digressioni storiche che la televisione non può sempre rendere fedelmente senza appesantire il ritmo. Perciò gli sceneggiatori condensano, spostano o talvolta fondono scene e personaggi: alcune sottotrame vengono ridotte, altre ampliate per motivi drammatici, e ogni tanto veniamo sorpresi da momenti creati apposta per la serializzazione.
