For a lighter, cozier vibe but still with genuine peril, the 'Hannah Swensen' mysteries have the love triangle with Mike the detective and Norman the dentist. Hannah is always stumbling into danger, and both men are often involved in trying to protect her or solve the case. It's a gentler form of the trope—the danger is more 'Murder, She Wrote' than 'True Detective,' but the romantic tension persists throughout the series alongside the mysteries.
For a YA take, 'One of Us Is Lying' and its sequels have pairs of teens investigating the mysteries that plague their school. Romantic relationships develop amidst the danger of being the next target. While they aren't professional detectives, they are forced into that role, and the threat is hyper-local and personal—their peers, their school, their secrets. The romance that blossoms feels urgent and fragile because of the constant peril. It's a different scale but the same core dynamic: solving a mystery while the mystery tries to solve you.
My contribution: the 'Mistborn' trilogy, oddly enough. While epic fantasy, the second book, 'The Well of Ascension,' has a huge mystery/political thriller element. The central couple, Vin and Elend, are literally trying to solve the mystery of the city's defenses and a potential traitor while their kingdom is under siege. They are both in immense physical and political danger, and their relationship is strained by the pressures of leadership and secrets. They have to trust each other's judgments while the world is literally collapsing around them. It's detective-adjacent but absolutely fits the 'couple in danger solving a mystery' brief.
I'm blanking on specific titles right now, which is frustrating because I know I've read a bunch. I feel like a lot of police procedurals on TV do this better than books sometimes? Like 'Castle' or 'The Mentalist,' where the will-they-won't-they tension is drawn out over seasons with constant peril. Maybe someone else can translate that dynamic into novel recommendations that capture that same blend of banter, case-solving, and life-threatening stakes.

I'm more of a lurker on these threads, but I'm taking notes. My to-read list just tripled. Some of these sound amazing, especially the ones with older protagonists or unconventional settings. The pressure to find the next big twisty thriller is exhausting; sometimes you just want a good puzzle with a satisfying emotional core.
The setting can make it. A detective romance on a transatlantic ocean liner in the 1920s is a different beast from one in a cyberpunk city. The confined space of the ship, the social rules, the inability to escape—it heightens everything. The same core plot (detective falls for suspect) feels fresh when dressed in period costumes and surrounded by the threat of being lost at sea. The environment should be a pressure cooker for the relationship, not just a backdrop.
Small-town settings work magic here. Everyone knows everyone, gossip spreads fast, and the detective and the love interest can't avoid each other even if they tried. The local diner, the town festival, the library—their paths cross organically. The mystery often involves the community's secrets, so the relationship develops alongside the unravelling of the town's facade. It feels cozy and integrated.
