‘The Woman in the Window’ delves into the mind games of agoraphobia and perception. The protagonist, confined to her home, witnesses a crime, but her own trauma, medication, and alcoholism make her an unreliable witness even to herself. The mystery becomes a puzzle about what is real and what is a fabrication of a traumatized mind.
The reader is put in the position of doubting the narrator alongside everyone else, making it a shared psychological dilemma.
‘Such a Fun Age’ by Kiley Reid explores the psychological minefield of race, privilege, and performative allyship. The mind games are social and subtle—a young Black babysitter is accused of kidnapping her white charge, and the white mother's subsequent, overzealous attempts to become 'woke' and fix things create a dynamic rife with unspoken tensions, guilt, and manipulation.
The suspense comes from waiting for these fraught, unacknowledged games to blow up.
You're looking for stories where the puzzle is a human mind. 'The Silent Patient' constructs an incredible cat-and-mouse game between a therapist and his completely silent patient. The whole mystery hinges on getting inside a psyche that's deliberately walled off. It's a slow, meticulous unraveling that feels more like psychological surgery than detective work.
The mind games here are layered—between the characters, and between the author and the reader. Just when you think you've solved the game, the rules shift.
For a fantastical twist, 'The Night Circus' is a beautiful, aching story built on a decades-long magical contest. Two young illusionists are bound to a game where they must out-create each other with ever more wondrous exhibits, without knowing the rules or how to win. The psychological game is one of artistry, love, and sacrifice within an impossible framework.
The competition is a quiet, gorgeous war of imagination and endurance.
‘The Chestnut Man’ by Søren Sveistrup (of 'The Killing' fame) is a nordic noir where the killer leaves a small doll made of chestnuts at each gruesome crime scene. The mind game is taunting and symbolic, forcing the detectives to decipher the meaning behind these tokens and the killer's connection to a controversial political case.
It's a race to understand a warped psyche before they strike again.

“In psychology, every feeling differs in each other through stages, that’s why different terms are created from affection, attachment, lust, and love. My feeling for you is only pure affection, it was not lust nor love. Our attachment to each other is not that strong so we cannot assume there is love between us, even after our first sight. We’ve just met. I am uncertain about what I feel for you. Space from you is honestly what I need right now. My apologies but I cannot be with you.”

I read a book years ago where the detective was the killer and had dissociative identity disorder, but he didn't know it. Spent the whole book following his investigation, only for the reveal to be that he was chasing himself. Can't for the life of me remember the title, but that premise broke my brain for a good month.
Mo Hayder’s ‘Birdman’ introduces Jack Caffery, a detective haunted by his brother’s childhood abduction. The mind games in this gritty, dark thriller are dual-layered: with a brutal killer and with the ghost of his own past. Caffery’s psychological baggage isn't just backstory; it actively warps his investigation and his moral compass. The external hunt and the internal struggle are so intertwined that solving the case feels like a step toward (or away from) his own personal abyss. It’s grim but brilliantly layered.
Chelsea Cain's 'Heartsick' starts with a truly twisted premise: a detective who was tortured by a female serial killer now works with her (from prison) to catch a new killer. The psychological dynamic is incredibly dark and co-dependent. The mind game is constant, as the detective must engage with his tormentor, using her insight while resisting her manipulation, making the investigation a continuous battle for his own sanity.
Shari Lapena writes some fantastically twisty domestic thrillers where the mind games are between people who supposedly love each other. 'The Couple Next Door' is a great entry point. It's all about secrets, lies, and the performances people put on in marriages and friendships. The puzzle is fun, but the real tension comes from wondering which character's version of events you can trust, if any. It’s like watching a glass table crack slowly under weight.
Check out 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things'. Don't let the title fool you; it's a relentless cerebral nightmare. The entire story feels like a logic puzzle built on shifting sand. A woman goes to meet her boyfriend's parents at their remote farm, and every conversation is just...off. The dread builds from the uncanny dialogue and the creeping sense that reality's rules no longer apply. It's a book you almost need to read twice because the first time is just pure psychological disorientation. The mind games aren't between characters; they're between the author and you, the reader.
