A lot of folks recommend 'Anna' first because it's shorter, but page count can be deceptive. 'Anna' is emotionally denser, more psychologically claustrophobic. 'War and Peace' has breathing room—literally, descriptions of landscapes, battles, hunting trips. Some find the very spaciousness of 'War and Peace' easier to digest in small doses, even if there are more doses overall.

Watch a good adaptation first. The BBC 'War and Peace' from a few years back with Paul Dano is excellent. The Joe Wright 'Anna Karenina' film is a stylistic marvel. It helps to have faces and a visual grasp of the storylines before diving into the text. It makes the book feel familiar, not foreign.

Check your library for a 'Great Courses' or similar lecture series on Tolstoy. Listening to a few introductory lectures about his life, themes, and the historical context of 'War and Peace' before you even open the book can be a game-changer. It turns a daunting task into a guided tour. You'll appreciate the nuances so much more.

I wonder if the popularity of certain translations creates a kind of consensus that might not fit every reader. I tried the famed P&V 'War and Peace' and found it oddly stilted in places. Switched to the Briggs translation and it flowed much better for me. Translation is a deeply personal taste—sample a few!

Don't force it. Read the first fifty pages of each. See which prose style, which setting, which set of characters grabs you by the collar. You'll know. The right book will create a pull that the other one, for all its greatness, might not match for you at this moment. Let your own curiosity be the guide.

What is the best Leo Tolstoy novel to start with?

If you're dipping your toes into Tolstoy's world for the first time, I'd enthusiastically point you toward 'Anna Karenina'. It’s got everything—passion, scandal, existential musings, and those razor-sharp observations about society that Tolstoy does so well. The dual narrative between Anna’s tragic love story and Levin’s agrarian idealism creates this incredible tension between personal and societal collapse. Plus, the characters feel so alive; you’ll catch yourself arguing with them like they’re real people. That said, don’t sleep on 'War and Peace' if you’re up for a marathon. It’s less daunting if you treat it like a series of intertwined novellas rather than one monolithic tome. The battle scenes, the philosophical detours, Natasha Rostova’s whirlwind romances—it’s all worth the effort. But yeah, start with 'Anna Karenina'. It’s like Tolstoy’s gateway drug.

Which Premchand novel should new readers start with and why?

I appreciate the folks suggesting short stories, but for me, a novel provides the immersive depth you need to really feel the weight of his world. A short story is a piercing needle; a novel is a heavy blanket. I wanted to live with Hori and Dhania for weeks, to feel the seasons change in their village, to experience the slow grind of their debt. That cumulative effect is unique to the novel form. So I'd still advocate for starting with a novel to get the full Premchand experience. The short stories are brilliant complements, but the novels are his symphonies.
