Lol, reading these replies is just adding to my endless TBR pile. My Kindle is weeping. I come for one recommendation and leave with twenty. This is why I love these threads though—you discover stuff you'd never find on a bestseller list.

I find 'engaging' often means 'flawed.' The protagonist of 'Yellowface' by R.F. Kuang, June Hayward, is a masterclass in an unlikeable, envious character's development. You watch her steal a deceased friend's manuscript and then spiral in a web of lies, racism, and online vitriol. Her descent into paranoid narcissism is horrifying but you can't stop reading.

The character arcs in 'The First Law' universe are engaging because they're so brutally honest about people rarely changing at their core. Glokta remains a cynical torturer, Logen stays a violent man haunted by his past, yet you understand them completely. The development is in the audience's perception, not the characters' morality. It's depressingly brilliant and feels more real than most redemptive arcs.

In terms of recent reads, 'Babel' by R.F. Kuang hit me hard. Robin Swift's transformation from an eager Oxford translator to a radicalized insurgent is a meticulous, heartbreaking deconstruction. You see every ideological brick being laid and then shattered by systemic cruelty. His development isn't likable in a traditional sense, but it's devastatingly compelling and morally complex.

For a classic that still feels fresh, 'Les Misérables' is a masterclass in contrasting development. Jean Valjean's lifelong struggle for redemption versus Javert's rigid worldview breaking down is the core of the story. The sheer scale of Valjean's internal battle, his constant choice to be good, is profoundly engaging across a massive timeline. It's the ultimate test of a man's soul.
