Audiobook listener perspective: it's a nightmare. You buy an anthology for one story, and the audio is 15 hours long. Some services let you buy single stories, but not all. I wish the publishers would release the Joanna (and Ali Reynolds) short fiction as their own mini-collections. I'd pay for that. As it is, I've only heard the ones that were released as standalone Audible shorts, like 'The Old Blue Line.'

Librarian here. We get this question a lot. Our system lists the short fiction in the author's bibliography, but we don't have a definitive reading order. I usually direct patrons to the Fantastic Fiction website or to the fan-created content on Pinterest—sometimes people make nice graphical timelines. It's a common issue with long-running mystery writers. They contribute to anthologies for exposure, but it creates a headache for readers who want everything in order.

Some of these anthologies are charity projects, so even if the story isn't essential, buying the book supports a good cause. That's how I justify the purchase. I get a Joanna story plus stories from other authors I might discover, and the money goes to a literacy fund or something similar. That makes the hunt feel worthwhile beyond just completism.

The anthologies are a mixed bag. Some, like 'MatchUp' or 'FaceOff,' are all crossovers between famous detectives. Others, like 'Deadly Anniversaries,' are original stories on a theme. The Joanna story in a crossover book is written to be accessible, so you don't need deep knowledge of the other character. But it still feels like an oddity in her canon. I read them for the novelty, not for Brady series continuity.

My rule of thumb: if the novella's title includes a main character's name ('Joanna's Husband...'), it's probably important to the timeline. If it's in a themed anthology with a generic title, it's probably a standalone, fun-sized case. The former I slot in carefully. The latter I read whenever. It simplifies the decision-making process a lot. 'The Last Goodbye' is the exception—it's a crossover, so it exists outside the normal rules.

What is the complete Joanna Brady book order in sequence?

Interesting question. Makes me want to revisit the early ones. The full sequence is Desert Heat, Tombstone Courage, Shoot/Don't Shoot, Dead to Rights, Skeleton Canyon, Rattlesnake Crossing, Outlaw Mountain, Devil's Claw, Paradise Lost, Partner in Crime, Exit Wounds, Dead Wrong, Damage Control, Fire and Ice, Judgment Call, The Old Blue Line, Downfall, Field of Bones, Missing and Endangered, Blessing of the Lost Girls. I fell off after 'Damage Control' for a while, then binged the newer ones. 'Field of Bones' was a real return to form, incredibly dark but compelling. The series has evolved from a more traditional mystery starting point to dealing with grittier, more serial-killer oriented plots in recent years, but Joanna's voice remains consistent. It's impressive.
