Can we talk about how the later novellas introduce entirely new Garde with their own Legacies? The order becomes important because these characters sometimes pop up in the main series later. Reading 'The Lost Files: The Fugitive' before 'The Fate of Ten' makes a certain cameo much more meaningful.
It's a shared universe in miniature. So while you can skip them, you'll miss out on the sense of a larger, living world where the war isn't just about the nine (or ten) we originally followed.

It's a testament to the series' world-building that people are so concerned with the 'right' order. A shallow world doesn't inspire this level of care. The right order is the one that keeps you reading. If you're the type who gets distracted by side stories, do the main six straight through. If you're a completionist who needs every detail in sequence, find an integrated guide. If you love character studies, read the main book for a character, then immediately read their novella. There's no wrong way, only different levels of immersion.

It's a testament to the world-building that people even care about the spin-off order. A weak universe wouldn't support this much expanded material. The fact that fans are meticulously charting where every novella fits shows how hungry readers were for more details about the Loric, the Mogadorians, and the global conflict. They fit in wherever there was a narrative question left unanswered in the main books. What was Sam up to during X event? How did this Garde get their scar? The spin-offs are the answer to those fan questions.

I remember hunting for a clear graphic online. Finally found one: it showed the main seven books as a horizontal line. Above and below that line were bars representing the novellas, showing where they fit in between the main books.
It was a 'Eureka!' moment. So my advice is to search for 'Lorien Legacies reading order infographic'. A good visual will make it click instantly. Then you can decide if you want to follow that integrated order or just read the main novels straight through.

They're skippable. There, I said it. The core seven-book arc is complete and satisfying on its own. The novellas are for superfans who can't let go. Their placement is academic. If you love the world, you'll eventually read them and find where they fit. If you're lukewarm on the series, they won't change your mind. Don't feel pressured by completionist guilt.

I see a lot of people stressing about 'getting it right.' The right way is the way you'll actually enjoy and finish. If a complex order feels like a chore, it is. If diving into a detailed timeline excites you, go for it. The books aren't going anywhere. You can always re-read them in a different order later. The first pass is for enjoyment. The second pass can be for completist analysis. Don't let perfectionism rob you of the simple fun of a story about alien teens kicking butt.

The Mogadorian perspective in some of the later novellas is WILD. It's easy to see them as generic evil aliens in the early books. The novellas complicate that. For that reason alone, I'd recommend reading at least 'The Fallen Legacies' before the final main books. It adds a necessary layer of ambiguity to the war. So, main books 1-4, then 'The Fallen Legacies', then main books 5-7.

I'm a stickler for chronology, but even I wouldn't read the prequel novellas first. They're more impactful when you already know the characters. So, start with 'I Am Number Four'. Read through to 'The Rise of Nine'. Then pause for 'Six's Legacy' and 'Nine's Legacy'. Then continue with 'The Fall of Five' and the rest. It's the perfect intermission.

From a purely publishing standpoint, the intended reading order is the main books first, with the novellas as optional companion pieces. But that’s a dry way to look at it. If you’re diving in fresh, I’d actually slot them in where they fit chronologically. It just enriches everything.
Read 'I Am Number Four', then immediately jump to 'Six’s Legacy'. It runs parallel to that first book, giving you her perspective on events you just read. Then read 'The Power of Six'. After that, 'Nine’s Legacy' shows what he was up to right before he enters the main story. Then 'The Fallen Legacies' bridges the gap right into 'The Rise of Nine'. It feels more like a complete, interwoven experience that way, rather than treating the novellas as afterthoughts.

It's a fun series with a surprisingly expansive world. The main throughline is clear: the six books titled 'I Am Number Four' through 'The Fate of Ten'. Everything else is satellite material. The 'Lost Files' novellas are like deleted scenes or bonus episodes. Some are really good—'The Forgotten Ones' gives Adam's perspective, which is awesome. I'd suggest reading them after the main book they're most associated with, if you can find a guide. But if that's too much hassle, main series first is perfectly satisfying.
