In "Star Wars," Obi Wan willingly allows himself to be struck down by Darth Vader. It was a case of noble sacrifice, but also strategy. He understood that he could be a more powerful mentor for Luke as a Force Ghost than if he were alive and still trying to help the boy.

This could seem a little like the type of proverbs 'lose one battle, win the war'.Obi Wan's death can actually be seen as something positive for Luke, pushing him to become a real Jedi. He now has an even stronger reason, his master's sense of injustice when killed, along with a determination and courage in standing up to oppose Forces for Darkness.

In Star Wars', Obi Wan's decision to let Darth Vader kill him wasn't defeat so much as it was a prophet combination of spiritual competence and sober strategic thinking; Ewan thought that when he died, since he would still be able to direct Luke through an occurrence consciousness which asked no distance questions (this is what is meant by becoming a Force Ghost -The ghost goes with Harrison Ford as he dies), there might yet be hope for the future.

Not only did his death help to further consolidate Luke's conviction to fight against the Dark Force, but it also enabled Obi Wan to transcend his physical form and become an enduring mentor. With the sacrifice the story had now taken a general direction, paving way for developments one must make later according to logic and judgements of prudence, but it was also proof of how wise his heart could be under such pressure.

For me, it allows the Space Cavalier Paragraph as Ewantraven: This isn't just about Star Wars because I had read them all and followed these movies all my life; let go of the last bastion that I was clinging to no matter what form it took. Not at all. It's more about accepting a simple fact - that he was more useful to Luke as a martyr in the story and all of its drama.

When Obi Wan died, he gave Luke Skywalker the impetus that he needed to delve more deeply into Ways of The Force and rise up against Vader and his Dark Side. Also, Obi Wan is aware that he will not die in the traditional sense. As a Jedi, he will go on guiding Luke, but in his spiritual form. This was an extraordinarily courageous and fateful decision.

Obi-Wan Kenobi 'disappears' during his duel with Darth Vader because he allows himself to be struck down. By doing so, he becomes one with the Force and his spirit remains present to guide Luke, the last hope for the Rebellion. It also demonstrated an understanding that there are things beyond the physical world which hold great power and meaning.
