Watching the Ohmu march in unison gave me chills—it’s like a mix of a crustacean molt and a biblical plague. Their design taps into primal fears of swarming creatures (think locusts or army ants) but flips it into something tragic and noble. Real-life inspirations? Maybe horseshoe crabs or millipedes, but with a spiritual twist that’s pure Ghibli magic.
From a speculative biology angle, the Ohmu could be cousins to extinct arthropods! Their segmented shells remind me of anomalocaris, a Cambrian-era predator, but their gentle demeanor is more like modern-day hermit crabs—just way more telepathic. The way they communicate through glowing feels inspired by bioluminescent creatures like fireflies or jellyfish. Studio Ghibli’s team probably mashed up these real-world traits with ecological themes to create something entirely new.
The Ohmu’s resemblance to real creatures is uncanny yet intentional. Their segmented bodies and mandibles scream 'insect,' but their emotional depth and collective consciousness lean into sci-fi. It’s like Miyazaki took the social structure of ants, the armor of a beetle, and the grandeur of a dragon, then wrapped it all in an environmental parable. They’re not just monsters; they’re a metaphor for nature’s wrath and wisdom.
I love how the Ohmu’s design plays with scale. Their eyes resemble compound insect eyes, but their size and behavior echo whales or elephants—majestic, slow-moving giants. The way they’re tied to the forest’s health also mirrors real ecosystems where keystone species, like wolves or corals, shape their environment. Miyazaki’s genius is making them feel both alien and eerily plausible.
Ohmu from 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' always struck me as this fascinating blend of biology and fantasy. They’ve got these massive, armored bodies and countless eyes, which makes me think of terrestrial arthropods like pill bugs or centipedes—just scaled up to kaiju size. But what really sets them apart is their hive mind and pacifism, which feels more like a commentary on nature’s balance than a direct copy of any real creature.
Hayao Miyazaki’s work often blurs the line between organic and symbolic, and the Ohmu embody that perfectly. Their design might nod to prehistoric trilobites or deep-sea isopods, but their role in the story—as guardians of the Toxic Jungle—pushes them into pure myth. It’s that mix of familiar and otherworldly that makes them so memorable.

Lately, buying succubi and incubi online had become all the rage. I could not afford one, so I picked one up from the side of the road instead.
It turned out the quality of this incubus left a lot to be desired. Not only did he have a terrible temper, but he showed absolutely no interest in me. He would rather starve than "feed".
Left with no other options, I snapped a photo of his incubus mark and sent it to the shop owner, asking how to handle this particular model.
The shop owner completely lost it.
"Oh my god, please tell me you're joking! That's not an incubus! That's a demon! The most dangerous kind!"

Ohmu are these massive, ancient creatures in 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' that look like giant armored insects with dozens of glowing blue eyes. They're kind of the guardians of the Toxic Jungle, and honestly, they freak me out a little—but in a good way. The way they move, all slow and deliberate, gives off this eerie vibe like they know way more than they let on.
What's fascinating is how they communicate. There's this whole scene where Nausicaä connects with them, and it's not through words but through emotions and visions. It makes me wonder if Miyazaki was hinting at how humans often misunderstand nature, seeing it as a threat when it's just trying to survive, just like us. The Ohmu aren't mindless monsters; they're deeply intelligent, almost spiritual beings. That moment when their eyes turn red during the stampede? Chills every time.
