The trilogy is essentially a symphony in three movements. The first movement ('Oryx and Crake') introduces the main themes and motifs in a bold, somber key. The second movement ('The Year of the Flood') recapitulates and varies those themes from different instrumental voices (Toby, Ren). The third movement ('MaddAddam') combines all the themes into a final, resolving chord. You wouldn't listen to the second movement of a symphony first. You'd lose the thread of the musical argument. Same here. The narrative and thematic argument Atwood is making requires the sequence she composed. Appreciate it as a complete piece of art, in order.
Think of it like a mosaic. 'Oryx and Crake' lays down the first major tiles: the story of Snowman, Crake, and Oryx. 'The Year of the Flood' adds a whole new set of tiles right beside them, covering the same period but from wildly different angles and characters. 'MaddAddam' is the grout that fills in the gaps and bonds the whole picture together, showing the aftermath and how these separate stories merge. If you look at the tiles in the wrong order, the image doesn't coalesce. You have to start with the first piece Atwood placed, or the bigger picture won't make visual or emotional sense.
I'm baffled that this is even a question. Read them in the order they were written and published. That's how the author conceived and released them. Every literary choice, every allusion, every piece of dramatic irony is calibrated for that sequence. Starting with 'The Year of the Flood' would be like watching 'The Empire Strikes Back' before 'A New Hope'—sure, you'll follow the plot, but the reveals and character developments are all out of whack. Respect the artist's intended experience. It's a trilogy, not a choose-your-own-adventure book.

Library waitlists will decide your order, let's be real. You put holds on all of them, and you read whatever comes in first. That's how I did it. Ended up with 'The Year of the Flood' before 'Oryx and Crake'. Was it ideal? Maybe not. But it taught me to piece a story together like a puzzle, which is a skill Atwood would probably appreciate.
Embrace the chaos of public library systems.
If you're a writer or aspiring writer, start with 'The Blind Assassin' or 'Alias Grace'. The craft on display is just staggering. The way she constructs narratives, weaves timelines, and hides clues in plain sight is educational. You'll find yourself re-reading paragraphs just to see how she pulled off a certain effect.
Reading her work with a writer's eye is a masterclass in technique, and those two novels are particularly brilliant examples of controlled, intricate storytelling.
Pay attention to the dedicatory poems or quotes at the start of her novels. They often provide a cryptic key to the book’s themes. For instance, 'The Handmaid’s Tale' begins with a snippet from Genesis and a mock-serious dedication. 'The Blind Assassin' has an epigraph from a Tennyson poem. Reading these carefully before you start the first chapter sets a deliberate tone. It signals that you’re entering a constructed world with layers of meaning. It’s a small ritual that can prime you for the kind of attentive reading her work rewards.
