I treat 'Without Remorse' and 'Rainbow Six' as a John Clark duology, separate from the Ryan saga. Read them together whenever you want. For the Ryan story, begin with 'Patriot Games'. It's his literal origin story—how a Marine turned historian gets pulled into intelligence work. It's a perfect, grounded starting point.
Then proceed to 'Red October', 'Cardinal', 'Clear and Present Danger', etc. This gives you Ryan's career in a clear, rising arc. Slot the Clark duology in after 'Clear and Present Danger' if you want, as a deep dive into his character right after he's been prominently introduced.

I'm waiting for someone to post the definitive list that includes all the ghostwritten continuations and the Jack Ryan Jr. series. That's when the real ordering nightmare begins. For the original Clancy novels, the debate is at least contained.
