Plankton's relentless quest for the Krabby Patty formula in 'SpongeBob SquarePants' is one of those running gags that never gets old—but also never really pays off for him. Over the seasons, he's come agonizingly close so many times: disguising himself as a fax machine, hypnotizing the entire town, even temporarily stealing Mr. Krabs' soul! But the show's brilliance lies in how it always pulls the rug out from under him at the last second. It's almost tragicomic how his plans crumble, often because of his own ego or SpongeBob's oblivious interference.
That said, there are a few rare moments where Plankton 'wins' in unconventional ways. In the episode 'Plankton's Army,' he technically gets the formula—only to realize he can't handle the power of running the Krusty Krab. And in 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,' he sort of redeems himself by teaming up with the gang. Those glimpses of success make his character more than just a one-note villain—they add layers to his desperation and make you root for him, even when he's doomed to fail again.
Plankton's entire existence is a meme at this point—the eternal underdog who never catches a break. But that's why we love him! His over-the-top schemes ('Robot SpongeBob,' anyone?) and dramatic meltdowns when they fail are peak comedy. The closest he ever got was probably in 'Friend or Foe,' where Mr. Krabs reveals they used to be business partners. For a second, you think maybe Plankton's grudge is justified... until he immediately backstabs Krabs again. Classic Plankton. Honestly, if he ever permanently stole the formula, the show would lose half its charm. His failures ARE the punchline.
Plankton's failures are legendary, but what fascinates me is how the show uses them to explore deeper themes. He's not just a scheming villain; he's a tiny guy in a vast ocean, constantly overshadowed by Mr. Krabs' empire. Every time he fails, it feels like a commentary on capitalism, ambition, or even the futility of obsession. Like in 'Single Cell Anniversary,' where Karen points out his tunnel vision—he could've been happy with her, but the Krabby Patty consumes him.
And yet, the rare times Plankton does succeed, it's never satisfying for him. The formula burns his tongue, or he gets overwhelmed by responsibility. The show subtly suggests that his real victory would be letting go of his fixation. It's weirdly profound for a cartoon about a sponge!

Because of the death of his first love, Don Stefano Giullani has hated me for eight years.
During those eight years, I make every effort to please him—I broker arms deals for him, handle smuggling routes, and even take bullets meant for him.
Even when he sees me barely clinging to life, Stefano only says, "If you really wanted to please me, you should have let the bullet hit somewhere fatal."
I press my hand over the wound and stare deeply at him.
Later, on the night our enemies surround the casino and it's raining bullets, Stefano pushes me away from him. He's riddled with bullets himself while saving me.
Before he dies, he shields me and gets me safely into the car.
Once the car door closes, he says softly, "In the next life, I don't want to meet you again."
After Stefano dies, his Madre slaps me hard across the face.
"Why wasn't it you who died? If I had known it would come to this, I would have let him marry Lucia!
"It's all my fault for forcing him to marry you. You deserve to die!"
She slaps me again, causing me to lose my footing and fall into the sea. Everyone just stands on the boat, watching in silence.
Seawater fills my nose, and when I open my eyes again, I find myself reborn eight years into the past—to the day before Stefano and I are about to get married.
This time, I will do as he wishes.
I'll stop clinging to him. I'll allow him and Lucia to be together.
