The 2021 'Candyman' reboot brought a fresh yet haunting take to the iconic horror franchise, and the role of the titular boogeyman was shared between two actors in a clever narrative twist. Tony Todd, the original Candyman from the 1992 film, returned to voice the character, lending that deep, chilling resonance fans know and fear. Meanwhile, the physical presence of Candyman was portrayed by Michael Hargrove, a dancer and actor whose imposing stature and silent menace added a terrifying layer to the urban legend. The dual casting was a brilliant choice—it bridged the legacy of the past with the new vision, making the hook-handed phantom feel both timeless and eerily immediate.
What I loved about this approach was how it honored the mythos while expanding it. Todd’s voice is practically synonymous with Candyman’s mythic whispers, so hearing him again was like stepping back into a nightmare you’d never fully escaped. Hargrove, on the other hand, brought raw physicality; his scenes were wordless but dripping with dread, especially in those shadowy mirror sequences. The film’s director, Nia DaCosta, described the character as a 'collective'—a idea that the legend isn’t just one man but a cycle of violence and trauma. That thematic depth made the casting feel purposeful, not just nostalgic. Plus, seeing Todd’s influence woven into a new generation’s fears? Chills, literal chills.

The 2021 reboot of 'Candyman' had this eerie, almost poetic vibe that felt deeply tied to its locations, and a lot of that authenticity comes from where it was shot. Most of the filming took place in Chicago, specifically around the Cabrini-Green neighborhood, which is loaded with history—both real and cinematic. The original 'Candyman' (1992) was set there, and the 2021 version pays homage by returning to those roots, though the actual Cabrini-Green housing projects were demolished years ago. The production used surrounding areas and soundstages to recreate that unsettling urban legend energy. You can spot landmarks like the former Cabrini-Green row houses and the towering skyscrapers of downtown Chicago looming in the background, which adds this stark contrast between the forgotten and the modern.
They also filmed at the UIC campus for some scenes, giving those academic yet slightly sterile environments a creepy twist. What’s cool is how director Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele (who co-wrote and produced) leaned into Chicago’s architectural duality—the brutalist structures and glossy high-rises—to mirror the film’s themes of gentrification and trauma. Fun tidbit: some interior scenes were shot at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, where a lot of the 'Chicago Fire'/'PD'/'Med' shows are made. The city’s gritty, layered texture is practically a character in the movie, and it’s wild how much the locations amplify the horror. I still get chills thinking about those honeycomb windows in the abandoned buildings—pure nightmare fuel.
