Oh, the sheer brilliance of Danny McBride as Jesse Gemstone! I've been a fan of his since 'Eastbound & Down', and seeing him bring that same chaotic energy to 'The Righteous Gemstones' is pure joy. Jesse's this hilariously flawed megachurch heir who's equal parts charismatic and utterly ridiculous. McBride nails the blend of arrogance and vulnerability—like when Jesse tries to rap in that cringe-worthy music video scene. It’s his signature style: over-the-top yet weirdly relatable. The way he delivers lines like 'I speak in tongues... mostly Portuguese' kills me every time. Honestly, the whole cast (Walton Goggins! John Goodman!) elevates the show, but McBride’s performance is the glue that holds its absurdity together. I’d binge this show just for his facial reactions alone.
Jesse Gemstone is this glorious mess of a character, and Danny McBride plays him with such commitment that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role. I’ve rewatched scenes where Jesse tries to parent his kids (and fails spectacularly) or when he ‘exorcises’ a demon from a car—McBride’s timing is flawless. What’s fascinating is how the show balances his absurdity with moments of genuine tension, like the season 2 arc with the Lissons. McBride somehow makes you root for Jesse despite his countless flaws. Side note: His chemistry with Edi Patterson (who plays Judy) is comedy gold. Their sibling fights are the stuff of legend.
Danny McBride’s portrayal of Jesse Gemstone is like watching a train wreck you can’t look away from—in the best way possible. What I love is how he infuses the character with this delusional self-righteousness, like when he’s preaching about wealth being a blessing while blatantly laundering money. It’s satire at its sharpest, and McBride’s background in comedy (he co-created the show!) shines through. Fun detail: Jesse’s wardrobe is alligator boots and gaudy suits, which McBride reportedly helped design to emphasize the character’s tacky grandeur. The role feels tailor-made for his brand of humor—loud, unapologetic, and layered with just enough pathos to make you oddly invested in Jesse’s redemption arcs.
McBride’s Jesse is a masterpiece of comedic arrogance. Think televangelist meets mob boss, with a dash of spoiled rich kid. The way he yells ‘Daddy!’ at John Goodman’s character cracks me up every time. It’s the little things—like his terrible karate moves or how he treats his motorcycle like a sacred relic—that make the performance unforgettable.

The cast of 'The Righteous Gemstones' is stacked with talent that brings this wild, darkly comedic world to life. Danny McBride shines as Jesse Gemstone, the egotistical eldest son of a televangelist family—his delivery of absurdly self-righteous lines is pure gold. John Goodman plays Eli Gemstone, the patriarch who’s equal parts charismatic and morally dubious. Adam Devine’s Kelvin Gemstone is hilariously clueless, while Edi Patterson steals scenes as Judy, the chaotic sister with a knack for terrible decisions. Then there’s Walton Goggins as Baby Billy, a sleazy uncle whose flashback sequences are some of the show’s best moments.
What I love about this ensemble is how they balance over-the-top humor with moments of genuine vulnerability. Tony Cavalero’s Keefe, for instance, starts as a joke but grows into this oddly endearing figure. The supporting cast, like Cassidy Freeman as Jesse’s long-suffering wife and Greg Alan Williams as the family’s loyal enforcer, adds layers to the chaos. It’s one of those rare shows where even minor characters feel fully realized, like Tim Baltz’s BJ, Judy’s hapless fiancé who’s just trying to survive this mess.
If you're itching to dive into the chaotic world of the 'Righteous Gemstones', HBO Max is your go-to spot. It's the exclusive home for all seasons, and honestly, the platform's interface makes binge-watching dangerously easy. I lost a whole weekend to it last month—no regrets. The show's blend of dark humor and family drama hits differently when you can jump from one episode to the next without buffering.
For those without HBO Max, you might find older seasons on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV for purchase, but subscriptions like Hulu or YouTube TV sometimes offer HBO as an add-on. Just a heads-up: the Gemstone family’s antics are best enjoyed legally; their hypocrisy is satire enough without pirating!
