It's not really my area, but this thread is fascinating. I mostly read fantasy, but I see parallels in how you build a magic system with consistent rules (realism) and then create plots that test those rules (suspense). Maybe all genre fiction is about building a believable framework and then finding the dramatic pressure points within it. You all have given me a lot to think about for my own writing.
First-person vs. third-person changes everything. First-person, like in a Marlowe novel, the realism is filtered through a biased, possibly unreliable narrator. The suspense is personal and immediate. Third-person omniscient can give a more 'documentary' realism, showing multiple steps of the investigation. The suspense comes from dramatic irony—we see the killer planning while the police are still two steps behind. The choice of POV dictates the balancing act.
You lost me at 'balance.' I'm in it for the vibes. Give me a rain-slicked city at night, a detective with a past, and a bottle of bourbon in a desk drawer. The procedure can be as loose as it wants. If the atmosphere is thick enough, I'll believe anything. Sometimes realism is overrated. Suspense is a feeling, not a checklist.
Procedurals often fail when the detective is a superhero. The balance works when the detective is smart but makes mistakes a real person would make—misinterpreting a clue because they're tired, trusting the wrong informant. The suspense comes from watching them realize and correct those errors, often under duress. Realism is in the fallibility; suspense is in the race to overcome it.
The supporting cast sells the realism. The janitor who sees everything, the desk sergeant who's a gossip, the medical examiner with a dark sense of humor. These characters make the precinct feel lived-in. The suspense often comes from information flowing through these channels—a crucial piece of gossip overheard, an offhand comment that cracks the case. It feels real because workplaces are networks of people, not just hierarchies.

I quit and dipped. City threw a parade.
Only Jenna Blake—my oh-so-gifted junior who claimed she could "see through killers' eyes"—lost it.
At her celebration banquet, she went full drama queen:
"I owe everything to Kate Mercer. Please, bring her back!"
I laughed. Cold. Not happening.
Last time around, I was the hotshot detective. But every clue I found? She dropped it first like she read my mind.

Boom. She's the city's golden girl.
I'm the clown with no game.
Pressure got ugly. My head snapped. I died chasing the last scumbag.
Then—bam. I woke up. Same day. Raid morning. Round two.

Wait, are we including police procedurals that are also romances? Because those have a whole other balance to strike—workplace ethics, conflict of interest. The legal realism sometimes takes a backseat to the relationship tension, which can be fun in its own way.
The politics of press involvement. Managing the media is a huge, often overlooked part of real police work. A gripping procedural can weave in this element beautifully. Does a leak force their hand? Does a reporter's digging uncover a clue—or create a dangerous situation? Does the department need to hold back information to weed out false confessions? The dance between transparency and secrecy, between public interest and investigative integrity, adds a whole other layer of strategy and pressure. The detectives are playing to two audiences: the criminal and the public, and their moves have to account for both.
Wait, does anyone have a link to that interview with that ex-detective turned author? I feel like they said something once about the most unrealistic thing being how clean the crime scenes are in books versus the... olfactory reality. It stuck with me.
