I feel like the term 'twist ending' is overused. A true twist should recontextualize the narrative, not just provide a surprise culprit. By that standard, 'The Night Shift' by Alex Finlay has a fantastic one. It weaves together a historic mass murder at a Blockbuster and a present-day copycat crime. The connection between the past and present perpetrators isn’t what you think, and the real twist is the 'why'—a heartbreaking cycle of trauma and misguided protection that changes how you view every character’s actions.

I’m always skeptical of lists because 'twist' is so subjective. What one person finds jaw-dropping, another might see coming from chapter two. It depends so much on your reading habits, what tropes you’re familiar with, and even your mood. I’d say focus on authors known for tight plotting rather than chasing the 'biggest' twist.

Did any of the 2022 twists actually hold up to a logic check, though? I find that often, for the twist to work, you have to accept that a character would behave in a wildly irrational way just to keep the secret. 'The Last House on the Street' by Diane Chamberlain (more domestic thriller) had a twist rooted in historical racism and a hidden relationship. While emotionally powerful, part of me questioned the logistical feasibility of keeping that secret in a small town for decades.

Sometimes the emotional truth of a twist outweighs its practical plausibility, and I think that’s okay if the character work is strong enough.

I'm a big fan of twists that challenge the reader's morality. 'The Last Thing He Told Me' by Laura Dave (2021, but huge in 2022) has a twist that's less about crime and more about sacrifice. The reveal of why Hannah's husband disappeared reframes him from a possible criminal to a man making an impossible choice to protect his daughter. The shock is emotional—it makes you question what you'd do in his shoes.

Which psychological thriller authors excel at twist endings?

My favorite twists are the ones that make me complicit. 'The Dinner' by Herman Koch is a brutal example. As the narrator's biases and lies peel away, you realize you've been siding with a monster. The twist is your own moral failure as a reader. That's a powerful, uncomfortable trick to pull off, and few authors do it as effectively.

What 2022 mystery thriller book has the most shocking twist ending?

I'm still thinking about the twist in 'The Quiet Tenant' by Clemence Michallon. It's from the perspective of the serial killer's latest captive, his neighbor, and his daughter. The twist isn't about the killer getting caught; it's about the intricate, silent alliance that forms between the women in his life. The shocking part is the culmination of their plan—it's a moment of collective, quiet defiance that is both terrifying and exhilarating. The power of the twist is in its subversion: you expect a heroic rescue, but you get something far more nuanced and collaborative. It's a chilling, feminist take on the captivity narrative with an ending that is both hopeful and hauntingly ambiguous.
