FFN’s app is clunky, but its sheer size for Harry Potter means someone will eventually stumble on your OC. Just use a clear summary, tag ‘OC’ in the character field, and be patient. The review system there can be brutally honest, but it’s real engagement. My Hufflepuff healer OC fic got maybe three reviews in six months on AO3 but sparked a whole debate thread on FFN about magical theory. Different vibes entirely.

Alright, I’ve been floating around the Harry Potter fanfiction scene since the old FictionAlley days, so I’ve seen the ecosystem shift a ton. For OC-centric stories, the culture on each platform is really different and that’s your main deciding factor. AO3 is my top recommendation—the tagging system is a lifesaver for letting people find exactly your niche, whether it’s a next-gen OC or a Marauder-era original character. The culture there is generally very supportive of OCs if they’re tagged properly and the writing is strong. I’ve had way more in-depth, thoughtful feedback on my Slytherin OC there than anywhere else.
You could also try a more dedicated space like the Harry Potter Fanfiction subreddit’s sister forum, though they can be a bit more critical of pure OC work. FanFiction.Net still has a massive HP audience, but discoverability for OCs is tougher and the interface feels ancient. Honestly, cross-posting to both AO3 and FFN gives you the widest net. I’d avoid Wattpad for serious HP OCs unless your story leans heavily into a romance trope that fits that platform’s younger demographic—the OC might just get lost in the sea of 'y/n' stories.

I actually disagree with the automatic push to AO3 for everything. Publishing an OC story there can feel like shouting into the void if you don’t already have a network. The kudos system is nice, but it’s not super conversational. For OCs, community feedback in the drafting stage is gold. I’d suggest starting on a dedicated Discord server like The Three Broomsticks or a forum like HarryPotterFanFiction.com (which is still kicking!). You can get chapter-by-chapter reactions, which is invaluable for figuring out if your character’s voice is working.
Once the story is solid, then maybe cross-post to the bigger archives. It’s slower, but you’re less likely to get discouraged by initial low stats. I’ve seen really amazing OC fics grow a loyal following this way, because the readers feel invested from the early feedback loops.

OC-centric fics build a new character who interacts with the established world, which changes the entire narrative pressure. Stories about Luna's cousin arriving at Hogwarts in fifth year, for example, force the writer to justify why this person matters and how they fit without overshadowing Harry. That justification often means deeper worldbuilding in the background—how the Ministry functions for a half-blood from France, or what the daily grind is like for a Hufflepuff not involved in the plot. The emotional core shifts from reconciling with canon events to surviving them as an outsider, which can feel more isolating or, weirdly, more relatable if you've ever felt like the new kid.
Canon character tales, especially the Marauders-era stuff, have a different anchor. Everyone already knows how it ends, so tension comes from the journey and character voice. A Sirius Black fic doesn't need to explain who he is, but it absolutely has to nail his specific brand of arrogant loyalty or it falls apart. The appeal is in the embellishment and the deep-cut references, the 'what if' within the boundaries we already accept. OCs don't have that safety net, so they either soar on original ideas or flop from being too generic. I've dropped more OC fics than I've finished, but the ones that stick make the universe feel enormous in a way the original books never had time for.
