Okay, real talk: the werewolf novella? Hilarious. The vampire poker game? Brilliant. Some of these concepts are so silly and fun that they work perfectly in short story form but would overstay their welcome in a novel. They're concentrated doses of what makes the series great.

I appreciate that Hearne used novellas to give female characters like Granuaile and the Morrigan more depth. The main narrative is so Atticus-focused. These side stories feel like a corrective, an effort to flesh out the women in his life as full people with their own agendas. Important for balance.

The battle scenes in the novels are epic, but some of the best magic and problem-solving happens in the novellas. The constraints of a shorter format mean Hearne has to be clever with conflicts. You see Atticus use his wits and smaller-scale magic in creative ways. It's a nice contrast.

The ending of the main series is what it is. The novellas don't 'fix' it, but they do add emotional resonance. They remind you of the characters' lighter moments and personal growth, which softens the blow of the final novel's choices. They provide context, not a correction.

Controversial opinion: the novellas are better than some of the later novels. Tighter, funnier, more focused. 'Grimoire of the Lamb' is a perfect intro to Atticus's voice. I'd almost suggest starting with a couple of the early novellas to see if you like the style before committing to nine long books.

In a world where the moon shattered and the strong devoured the weak, Neoma Solstice is nothing. A scentless Null. A ghost. A mistake.
Until the day she saves a dying Lycan warrior with a touch, and her secret is revealed: she's Void-Born, the rarest mutation in existence. The same power that makes her invisible makes her invaluable—a living weapon that can cure the incurable Feral Rot plaguing the Lycan Ascendancy.
Captured and collared, Neoma is forced to serve as "Tether" to Unit Vanguard: four elite soldiers on the brink of madness. Barzil, the ruthless Commander who sees her as a mission. Wolfy, the cold Tactician who sees her as a puzzle. Viggo, the feral Berserker who sees her as salvation. Guller, the fallen Priest who sees her as redemption.
They own her contract. They control her life. They swear she's just a tool.
But tools don't make their masters kneel.
As Neoma's power grows, so does the threat she poses to the regime that enslaved her. When the prophesied Blood Moon rises, she'll have to choose: remain the Ascendancy's battery, or become the Void that devours them whole.
Some bonds are forged in blood. Some in magic. Theirs was forged in desperation—and it might be the only thing strong enough to save a dying world.
The Obsidian Covenant is a dark dystopian reverse harem romance featuring a morally gray FMC, four obsessive MLs, found family dynamics, enemies-to-lovers, rejected mate redemption, and a slow-burn that explodes into high heat. Perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince meets Den of Vipers in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Book two of the Dragon Rider series.
After the sudden attack on the compound and the betrayal of my dearest friend, we are forced into hiding as King Toban's army sweeps through the land. Aurora is missing and the new Dragon Riders are being taken hostage by Toban, and with the book gone, I'm left in its place. Secrets are being exposed and families torn apart, and as the Kingdom falls around us alliances must be made with those who once defied us.
The war I wished that would never happen has started. I must choose to save those around me, or myself.
Book 3
I need to save Aurora. But with the Red Moon staying, those without power are now in danger. With Toban holding Aurora captive and the land of Athena being taken over by Anna's Rogues, I learn that this isn't my only worry.
Markus is back and stronger than before, and with his new strength, the life of my friends comes into jeopardy. I must choose to save my Dragon, or the ones that have become my family... Or suffer from the Red Moon's curse, Death.
I stumbled upon 'Hounded' during a weekend binge of urban fantasy recommendations, and it completely sucked me into Atticus O’Sullivan’s world. What stands out is how Kevin Hearne blends mythology with modern-day humor—imagine a 2,000-year-old Druid sipping coffee in Arizona while dodging vengeful gods. The action scenes are crisp, but it’s the quirky side characters like Oberon, the telepathic Irish wolfhound obsessed with sausages, that steal the show. The pacing never drags, and Hearne’s writing feels like a chat with a witty friend.
If you enjoy Neil Gaiman’s myth-meets-mundane style but crave more sword fights and sarcasm, this is your jam. The series only gets richer from here, weaving in Norse, Celtic, and even Slavic lore. Just be warned: you’ll start side-eyeing your own dog, wondering if they’re secretly judging your life choices.
I totally get the urge to dive into 'Hounded' without spending a dime—budgets can be tight, and who doesn’t love a good urban fantasy romp? But here’s the thing: finding legit free copies online is tricky. The series is still under copyright, so most free versions floating around are pirated, which isn’t cool for the author, Kevin Hearne. I’ve stumbled on sketchy sites claiming to have it, but they’re usually riddled with malware or just plain scams.
Instead, I’d recommend checking your local library’s digital collection (Libby or OverDrive are lifesavers!) or hunting for secondhand paperback deals. Sometimes publishers offer first-book freebies to hook readers, but no luck for this one yet. It’s worth the wait—Atticus’s adventures are pure gold, and supporting authors keeps the magic coming.
Honestly, I made the mistake of reading a short story collection too early and got confused about a character's status. Stick to the core nine first: Hounded, Hexed, Hammered, Tricked, Trapped, Hunted, Shattered, Staked, Scourged. That's the Iron Druid Chronicles proper.
Everything else—'Two Ravens and One Crow', 'Grimoire of the Lamb', 'The Chapel Perilous'—are short stories or novellas. They're fun, but they're side dishes. Read the main course first, then sample the sides in any order you like from a compiled collection like 'Besieged'.
