If you want the smoothest ride through the 'ATM' universe, I usually tell people to follow publication order first — that’s how the pacing and reveals were intended. Start with 'ATM Vol. 1', then go on through 'ATM Vol. 2', 'ATM Vol. 3', 'ATM Vol. 4', 'ATM Vol. 5', 'ATM Vol. 6', and finish the main saga at 'ATM Vol. 7'. After the core story, read 'ATM: Interludes' (the short-story collection), then the prequel novella 'ATM: Origins' if you like origin-deep dives, and finally the sequel or epilogue volumes like 'ATM:
Aftermath' and any companion guides such as 'ATM: The Codex'.
Publication order keeps the author’s reveals intact and avoids spoiling how later books recontextualize earlier events. If you prefer the internal chronology, slip 'ATM: Origins' before 'ATM Vol. 1' and interleave the
novellas: the interlude tales usually slot between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 or between Vol. 5 and Vol. 6. I personally read the interludes after finishing the main volumes because they felt richer once I knew the characters, but some readers enjoy the chronological curiosity of the prequel first.
A few practical tips: if there’s a web novel source and a later light-novel edit, pick the light novel for polished prose unless you love raw drafts and stray scenes. Watch for omnibus editions that renumber volumes — they can confuse the order if you buy used copies. Also check whether translated editions include the short stories; sometimes those come later. Reading in publication order gave me the most satisfying reveals and emotional beats, but mixing in the novellas during a reread made the whole world feel huger and cozier.
