Can we talk about how expensive it gets? Committing to a 12-book series in order means buying 12 books, often in hardcover if you want them to match. Then you find out there are 4 essential e-novellas only available digitally. My wallet and my bookshelf weep.
If a series has a 'core' trilogy or quartet that completes one major romance arc, I read that straight through first. Then, I treat all subsequent spin-offs, prequels, and companion novels as a separate, expanded universe. That first core story remains a pristine, satisfying experience.
The sheer anxiety of choosing the wrong order has put me off starting several big series. I'll spend more time researching the 'optimal experience' than actually reading. Sometimes I wish authors would just number everything clearly, including where the short stories fit.
I appreciate when authors release 'bind-up' editions that compile the main novels and all the relevant short stories in the correct narrative order. It takes the guesswork out and lets me just enjoy the story as one continuous flow. More of that, please.
I look for the 'romance timeline' charts fans sometimes make. They map out when each couple meets, gets together, and has key moments across the various books. If my goal is to follow one epic love story, that's more useful than a general plot timeline.

shrug I usually just read whatever my friend lends me first. If I get confused, I ask them what I should read next. Having a guide who's already read it is the best 'order' of all. They can tailor it to what you like.
Look for omnibus editions or box sets. Publishers often bundle books in the order they deem most accessible for new readers, which might be a hybrid approach. This can be a great, low-effort way to go. Also, audiobook versions sometimes have narrator changes or production quirks that make a particular order more listenable. Audible reviews often mention if listening in a different sequence improved the experience.
The true chaotic neutral approach is to pick the book with the prettiest cover and dive in. Sometimes you stumble into the middle of a couple's saga and have to piece together their past, which is its own kind of fun.
It’s not for everyone, but there’s a certain thrill in not knowing anything and getting hit with all the drama and tension at once. You can always circle back later if you get hooked on the world. I did that with a popular fae series and ended up loving the disoriented, 'what is happening' feeling before everything clicked.
Honestly? Look up the fan wikis. They are a godsend for this. Don't trust the reading order lists on retailer sites; they're often wrong or just list everything by publication date without context. The wikis are maintained by superfans who have mapped out every character appearance, timeline crossover, and suggested reading path. They'll usually have a 'new reader guide' section that outlines a few different options: pure chronological, publication order, or a 'recommended' order that blends the two for the best experience. It's the first thing I do before starting any sprawling series now.
