These novels are a psychological safe space to explore themes of power and submission within a highly structured setting. The heroine submits to societal rules, but within the courtship, she often wields surprising power over the hero through her wit, beauty, or refusal. The dance of courtship is a negotiation of power within strict boundaries. Marriage is the final contract that (ideally) balances his social power with her domestic and emotional influence. It’s a fantasy of having agency within a system designed to deny it.
Marriage markets. The season in London is literally a market where daughters are presented as commodities to secure the best alliance. The novels often show the anxiety and dehumanization of this process from the heroine's perspective. Her resistance to being 'sold' is a key point of identification for the modern reader. The happy ending is her escaping the market's worst outcomes by finding a man who sees her as a person, not a commodity—though she still ends up married, which was the market's goal all along. It's a tricky line to walk.
What gets me is the sheer number of dukes. There were only a couple dozen real dukes in Regency England, but you'd think they were as common as hedgehogs from reading these books! It's a fantasy of marrying the highest possible rank. The duke represents the pinnacle of the social pyramid. By making the love interest a duke, the story maximizes the social elevation fantasy for the heroine (and the reader). It's the ultimate Cinderella story, reinforcing the idea that the top of the class system is the most desirable place to be.
Sometimes I like to imagine the fanfiction crossovers. Like, a Regency heroine somehow ends up in a modern coffee shop and has a meltdown over the lack of chaperones. Or a zombie apocalypse hits during a ball. The extreme rigidity of the class system would clash hilariously (or horrifically) with any other genre. The rules are so absolute that breaking them with an outside context feels like a pressure valve releasing. The marriage plot would be the least of their worries!
