Nemo et Dory, or 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory' as most folks know them, are two of my all-time favorite Pixar films. The first one, 'Finding Nemo,' hit me right in the feels when I was a kid—the vibrant underwater world, Marlin’s desperate journey to find his son, and Dory’s hilarious yet heartwarming memory loss all came together perfectly. The animation still holds up today, and the emotional beats land just as hard.
'Finding Dory' had big shoes to fill, and while it didn’t quite reach the same heights for me, it was still a blast. Dory’s backstory added depth to her character, and the new sea creatures like Hank the septopus were a riot. Some critics said it felt a bit too similar to the first one, but honestly, I didn’t mind. It’s like revisiting old friends with a fresh adventure. Both movies are solid gold for families or anyone who loves a good laugh with a side of tears.
If you’re looking for pure joy, these movies deliver. 'Finding Nemo' taught me about courage and letting go, while 'Finding Dory' celebrated self-acceptance. The humor’s timeless—who doesn’t quote 'Just keep swimming'? The sequels rarely live up to the original, but Dory’s charm and the ocean’s beauty make it worth revisiting. Pixar’s magic is real here, even if it’s not their absolute best.
From a more critical lens, 'Finding Nemo' is near-perfect storytelling—tight pacing, memorable side characters, and a universal theme of parental love. 'Finding Dory,' though fun, stumbles a bit with its plot convenience. Dory’s sudden ability to 'remember' things when the script demands feels a tad forced. That said, the voice acting (Ellen DeGeneres kills it) and the visual creativity (that marine institute!) keep it engaging. Not a masterpiece, but far from a disappointment.
Honestly, I rewatch 'Nemo' yearly—it’s that good. 'Dory' is more of a mood watch for me, but both films excel in creativity. The way Pixar animates water still blows my mind. And hey, any movie that makes a septopus relatable deserves props. They’re comfort films with enough depth to keep adults hooked and enough silliness for kids.
Some fans argue 'Finding Dory' didn’t need to exist, but I disagree. It expands the world beautifully, especially with Hank’s grumpy-but-lovable personality and the toddler-esque otters stealing every scene. The pacing’s snappy, and the emotional core—Dory reuniting with her family—gets me every time. It’s not as groundbreaking as 'Nemo,' but it’s a cozy, satisfying follow-up that doesn’t tarnish the original’s legacy.
