I find a lot of what's marketed as 'romance for men' in mainstream publishing is just action-adventure with a love interest. For true character-growth-focused stuff, you often have to go to genres that aren't shelved as romance. Literary fiction, upmarket fantasy/sci-fi, and graphic memoirs are where the nuanced male emotional journeys live. The romance is a component, not the selling point, which often makes it feel more integral to the character's development.

Look for books where the romantic relationship is the catalyst for the protagonist to fix his own mess. In 'Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine,' the male lead, Raymond, is not the protagonist, but his friendship (with romantic undertones) with Eleanor is crucial to her healing. From his perspective, the story is about how caring for someone else pulls him out of his own rut. It's a great look at how connection can be mutually therapeutic, even if the narrative isn't from his direct POV.

Gaming narratives often handle this well. Play 'The Last of Us Part II' if you haven't. It's not a book, but the narrative depth is novel-level. The central relationship between Ellie and Dina, and the parallel one between Abby and Lev, are all about trauma, forgiveness, and the desperate search for meaning and connection after loss. It's a brutal, heartbreaking look at how love can both destroy and save a person. The character growth is immense, though brutally earned.

Elliot Carter never loses.
Not to his father.
Not to anyone.
And definitely not to the infuriating 'golden' boy who suddenly moves into his house.
When Elliot’s father marries Asher Brooks’ mother, his already broken world cracks even more. Asher is everything he despises—calm, disciplined, admired by everyone at university. The kind of guy who smiles like he has nothing to prove.
From the moment they meet, it’s war.
Elliot thrives on pushing buttons. Asher refuses to be provoked. Their fights are sharp, personal, and relentless, until one night, anger turns physical… and something far more dangerous ignites between them.
A line is crossed that neither of them can uncross.
Asher refuses to feel guilty.
Elliot refuses to admit he wanted it.
Now they’re trapped under the same roof, and the more they try to hate each other, the more dangerous the attraction becomes.
Because this isn’t just rivalry.
It’s obsession.
And when control becomes the weapon of choice, someone is bound to break.
The only question is... Who will break first?
“I don’t share what’s mine, Dove,” he warned.
“And who said I’m yours?” Even as I was rejecting the notion of 'belonging' to another person, heat stole my body and mind in the predatorial claim, with the dark warning of the stranger's body and eyes.
“You,” a dark and still warm grin steals his gorgeous features as every inch of me rose to his hands, silently begging for his continued attention....“You were made for me Dove and I want you to be mine this week.....

But Gracelyn isn’t afraid of his darkness.
As enemies close in and secrets from Damon’s past resurface, Gracelyn becomes both his greatest weakness and his only strength. To protect her, he’ll have to face the demons he’s been running from—and decide if he’s willing to risk everything for a second chance at love.
Because sometimes the most broken Alpha doesn’t need saving…
He just needs his mate.
I’ve been diving deep into fanfiction lately, especially those that explore the emotional arcs of 'nice guys' in movies. One standout is the '500 Days of Summer' fandom, where writers often take Tom’s journey and expand it into something more introspective. They delve into his growth beyond the film’s ending, showing how he learns to balance idealism with reality. These stories often pair him with OCs or side characters who challenge his worldview, forcing him to mature emotionally.
Another gem is the 'About Time' fandom. Tim’s inherent kindness gets explored in fics where his time-travel abilities are less about romance and more about personal growth. Writers love to put him in scenarios where he must confront the consequences of his choices, leading to profound emotional depth. The best ones focus on his relationships with his family, especially his father, adding layers to his 'nice guy' persona.
I'd argue some of the best emotional growth for male characters happens in novels not strictly shelved as romance. 'The Song of Achilles' is a tragic, beautiful love story where Achilles' growth (and lack thereof) is the tragedy. His journey from a passionate youth to a prideful, grieving warrior is driven by his love for Patroclus.
Don't overlook manga and manhwa for this! 'A Sign of Affection' is a slow-burn romance about Yuki, a college student who is deaf, and her growing relationship with a worldly senior named Itsuomi. The saga focuses intensely on communication, understanding, and the emotional growth that comes from bridging worlds. Itsuomi learns sign language not as a grand gesture, but as a genuine desire to connect, and Yuki grows in confidence as she navigates a hearing world. The healing is subtle—it's about overcoming isolation and the fear of being a burden, and finding someone who sees your whole self. The emotional progression is depicted with such delicate, patient artistry.
I like when the emotional hurdle is something specific and relatable, like fear of abandonment, imposter syndrome, or parentification. In 'The No-Show' by Beth O'Leary, one of the male storylines involves a character so accustomed to being the caregiver that he's forgotten how to have needs. His growth is in accepting care from others.
