I feel like ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney fits here, though it’s less about a single traumatic grief and more about the chronic grief of miscommunication, class difference, and mental health. They keep getting second, third, fourth chances because their connection is so profound, yet they keep hurting each other. It’s a sad romance about two people who love each other but can’t seem to get their lives to align in a way that allows them to be happy together.

‘If We Were Villains’ by M.L. Rio is a dark academia thriller where a group of Shakespearean actors are involved in a death. The central romance is a tragic, forbidden love between two of the students, filled with guilt, performance, and sacrifice. The grief is for a lost friend, a derailed life, and a love that could only flourish in the shadows of a crime. The ‘second chance’ comes after prison, fragile and forever changed.

‘The Vanishing Half’ by Brit Bennett has a central romance for one of the twins, Jude, with a trans man named Reese. Their story is about finding someone who sees your true self when you’ve spent a life hiding. The grief here is for lost family, a discarded identity, and the pain of passing. Their relationship is a second chance at living authentically and being loved for it, set against a backdrop of complex racial and personal history. It’s more of a subplot but incredibly powerful.

I’m seeing a lot of newer titles, which is great, but let’s not forget the old-school heart-wrenchers. ‘Love Story’ by Erich Segal. ‘Oliver’s Story’ is the sequel that deals directly with grief and moving on. They’re cheesy by today’s standards maybe, but they defined a generation’s idea of tragic romance. The famous line, ‘Love means never having to say you’re sorry,’ came from here, for better or worse.

I read ‘The Book of Form and Emptiness’ by Ruth Ozeki recently. It’s a strange, wonderful book about a boy who hears objects speaking after his father’s death. His mother’s struggle with hoarding is a physical manifestation of her grief. A tentative romance with a quirky, street-smart girl offers him a second chance at connection outside of his overwhelmed mind. It’s a book about mourning, madness, and the objects and stories that hold our love and loss.
