I’m blanking on the author, but there’s a book called 'The Beauty That Remains' that follows three teens connected to a indie music scene after different losses (sister, ex-boyfriend, best friend). It shows how grief isolates you even when you’re surrounded by people who are also grieving. The coming-of-age is in finding a way to let music back in when it’s tied to pain.

Honestly, a lot of YA in this vein can feel formulaic, but 'I’ll Give You the Sun' by Jandy Nelson stands apart. It follows twins over years, before and after a tragedy, and their grief splinters their incredible bond. Their coming-of-age is messy, artistic, and queer, full of misunderstandings and grand gestures. The loss isn't just of a person but of time and trust between them. Nelson’s prose is so exuberant and messy it makes the sad parts hit even harder.

Which timeless young adult novels explore coming of age and grief?

I feel like modern YA sometimes focuses on romanticizing grief or tying it neatly to a love interest. The older classics often let the sadness just sit there, unresolved and messy. There's a different kind of truth in that.
