Scott Sigler’s 'Infected' trilogy is worth a look. It starts with a pandemic where people develop mysterious, parasitic growths that eventually hatch triangular, crystalline structures from their bodies. The origin is extraterrestrial, and the infection is designed to turn hosts into violent, psychotic soldiers. The body horror is extremely graphic, focusing on the physical and mental agony of the transformation. Sigler doesn’t hold back on the gore or the paranoia.

For a military sci-fi horror angle, 'Hell Divers' by Nicholas Sansbury Smith has elements of this. Humanity lives in airships above a poisoned Earth. The surface is inhabited by mutated 'Sirens'—former humans transformed by radiation and biological agents. While the origin is terrestrial disaster, the mutations are so extreme they feel alien. The body horror is in the descriptions of these creatures and in the slow degradation of the divers’ own bodies due to radiation exposure during their missions.

I’m just here for the recommendations. My own knowledge taps out at 'Alien' novelizations. Might lurk and see what else pops up in the thread.

If you like audio dramas, the podcast 'The White Vault' involves an Arctic research team discovering an ancient, cryptic biome that assimilates organic matter. The infection is slow, causing physical mutations and mental degradation as the environment itself works on them. It’s more folk-horror than sci-fi initially, but the underlying cause is distinctly non-terrestrial and operates on a biological level that’s utterly incomprehensible. The body horror is subtle but cumulative.

Every chapter is a brand-new sin. A fresh and wet craving. A whole new world where your desire ...always...fucking wins.
Some stories will lick you slow and sweet until you’re trembling. Some will drag you into the dark, choke you with lust, and leave you bruised and dripping.

But every single one answers the same dripping question:
If nobody was watching…
how fucking dirty would you sin

Can we talk about the practical effects of living with a mutation that isn't immediately lethal? The daily logistics. How do you buy clothes? How do you eat if your mouth has changed structure? How do you interact with loved ones who flinch at your touch? This mundane perspective is often glossed over, but it's a treasure trove for character-driven horror. The grand tragedy of the outbreak is over, and now you're left with the heartbreakingly ordinary struggle of existing in a world not built for you.
The first thing that struck me about 'Alien Body' was how it subverts classic sci-fi tropes while still feeling deeply rooted in the genre. Unlike the sprawling galactic epics of 'Dune' or the hard sci-fi precision of 'The Martian,' it opts for a claustrophobic, almost horror-like intimacy. The alien presence isn’t some distant empire or swarm—it’s personal, burrowed into the protagonist’s very flesh. That biological invasiveness reminded me of 'The Thing,' but with a psychological twist that echoes Jeff VanderMeer’s 'Annihilation.'
What really sets it apart, though, is the prose. It’s lyrical where most sci-fi leans technical, dripping with visceral imagery that makes the alien feel less like an external threat and more like a metamorphosis. The closest comparison might be Octavia Butler’s 'Xenogenesis' series, but even that feels more philosophical. 'Alien Body'? It’s a fever dream you can’t shake.
Symbiotic mutations are a unique flavor. The thing changing you isn't trying to destroy you; it needs you to live. It might even be beneficial, granting strength or longevity. But the cost is the slow erosion of your will, your memories, your identity. The horror is the gentle, welcoming takeover. You're not being attacked; you're being loved and consumed by something that calls itself a partner. Do you fight it, or embrace the comfortable extinction?
China Miéville's 'Perdido Street Station' is a steampunk/biopunk feast. The Remaking is a punishment that surgically and magically grafts machinery and animal parts onto criminals. The body horror is explicit and institutional. Meanwhile, the main plot involves a moth-like creature whose stolen wings trigger a crisis. The technology in Bas-Lag is often grotesque, alive, and fused with flesh in ways that are both awe-inspiring and deeply terrifying.
