A lot of these recommendations are pretty grimdark. Which is fair! But sometimes you want the fun, B-movie version. That's where books like 'The Last Smile in Sunder City' wait, no, that's fantasy. Man, I need coffee. 'Escape from Veilcorp'? No. I'm drawing a blank on a campy one.

Look into 'The Gone World' by Tom Sweterlitsch. It involves time travel and alternate futures, but a key setting is a nightmarish, derelict starship from a possible future timeline. The characters are essentially trapped in a looping, decaying reality where the ship is a tomb filled with cosmic dread. It's complex and horrifying in a very unique way.

'The Beast of Nightfall Lodge' isn't sci-fi, sorry. My brain is misfiring. Ignore that. Back to spaceships... 'The Void' by Brett J. Talley is a direct homage to Lovecraft in space. A ship answers a distress call from a derelict and brings a cosmic horror aboard. It's pulpy, fun, and knows exactly what genre it's in.

What's the appeal, really? I think it's the combination of ultimate vulnerability (the vacuum outside) with the violation of your only sanctuary. Your home becomes your tomb, and something is in there with you. It taps into a primal fear that's even older than ghost stories—the fear of the predator in your cave.

Ever read 'The Infected' by Scott Sigler? It's not a starship, but a sleeper ship carrying colonists. A bio-weapon gets loose, and the passengers are trapped in hypersleep while their bodies mutate. The horror is in the helplessness and the body horror unfolding while they're unconscious. It's a different kind of entrapment that really got under my skin.

In a world where the moon shattered and the strong devoured the weak, Neoma Solstice is nothing. A scentless Null. A ghost. A mistake.
Until the day she saves a dying Lycan warrior with a touch, and her secret is revealed: she's Void-Born, the rarest mutation in existence. The same power that makes her invisible makes her invaluable—a living weapon that can cure the incurable Feral Rot plaguing the Lycan Ascendancy.
Captured and collared, Neoma is forced to serve as "Tether" to Unit Vanguard: four elite soldiers on the brink of madness. Barzil, the ruthless Commander who sees her as a mission. Wolfy, the cold Tactician who sees her as a puzzle. Viggo, the feral Berserker who sees her as salvation. Guller, the fallen Priest who sees her as redemption.
They own her contract. They control her life. They swear she's just a tool.
But tools don't make their masters kneel.
As Neoma's power grows, so does the threat she poses to the regime that enslaved her. When the prophesied Blood Moon rises, she'll have to choose: remain the Ascendancy's battery, or become the Void that devours them whole.
Some bonds are forged in blood. Some in magic. Theirs was forged in desperation—and it might be the only thing strong enough to save a dying world.
The Obsidian Covenant is a dark dystopian reverse harem romance featuring a morally gray FMC, four obsessive MLs, found family dynamics, enemies-to-lovers, rejected mate redemption, and a slow-burn that explodes into high heat. Perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince meets Den of Vipers in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
No choosing. No apologies. No mercy.

I feel like 'Solaris' by Stanisław Lem is the philosophical granddaddy of this idea. The planet Solaris and the station orbiting it are confronting a completely alien intelligence. The horror is subtle, psychological, and deeply melancholic. The station isn't abandoned in the traditional sense, but the humans on it are utterly isolated and being psychologically tormented by the planet below. It's about the failure of communication and the terror of the utterly unknown. It's not scary in a conventional way; it's haunting. It will sit with you for a long time after you finish it, making you feel a profound sense of cosmic loneliness.
Dennis E. Taylor's 'Bobiverse' books are generally upbeat, but there are moments of genuine cosmic dread. In 'Heaven's River', the Bobs encounter a massive, alien megastructure—a tubeworld—housing a bizarre civilization. The sheer scale and age of it, and the mystery of its creators' fate, inject a real sense of the unknown.
It's not horror, but that frisson of facing something so old and vast that your own lifespan and concerns seem microscopic is definitely there. It's a lighter series that isn't afraid to touch on those darker, awe-inspiring themes.
The novel 'The Scourge Between Stars' by Ness Brown is a recent novella that's essentially a haunted house story on a generation ship. The ship is failing, and something is picking off the crew in the dark. The exploration of the ship's failing systems and hidden compartments is fraught with dread. The terror is classic but effective, using the ship's immense size and isolation to create a sense of inescapability.
It’s a tight, fast read that perfectly captures the 'thing in the dark' terror within a deep-space exploration framework.
