I'm a completionist, so I had to know. I made a spreadsheet. Publication order is the order of release, obviously. Timeline order based on internal dates is: 1. 'It Began in Brooklyn' (novella, pre-WWII), 2. 'A Match Made for Murder' (1945), 3. 'A Killer in King's Cove' (1946), and then the rest in the same sequence as publication. So the divergence is just at the very beginning. Not a huge deal, but good to know for purists.

Interesting question! I believe the core series is intended to be read in publication order. The timeline is mostly linear within that, with the exception of the novella 'It Began in Brooklyn' and the novel 'A Match Made for Murder,' which are prequels. The author's website lists them in publication order, which I take as the intended experience. Chronological order is for super-fans on a second read-through, maybe. First time through, trust the author's release schedule.

Huh, I always thought they were just straight historical mysteries in order. Now I'm intrigued by this prequel. What's it about, exactly? Is it a full novel or more of a short story? Might have to check it out, though I'm in the middle of three other series right now. My 'to be read' pile is a literal tower. Adding another book to the bottom probably won't hurt...

I find it helpful to think of it as two layers. Layer one is the mystery-of-the-week plot, which is almost always self-contained. For that, order barely matters. Layer two is the character serialization—Lane's life, her relationship with Darling, the community of King's Cove. For that deeper layer, publication order provides the most coherent emotional arc. So it depends on what you're reading for. If it's just the mysteries, grab any book. If it's for the characters, go by publication date.

Man, I tried timeline order on my first read and regretted it. Starting with the prequel made the first published novel feel slower, because I already knew the outcome of the central romantic tension. The mystery in 'King's Cove' is solid, but a big part of the early book's charm is wondering about Lane's past and her connection to the inspector. If you already have that backstory, some of the subtlety and suspense just evaporates. Stick to the order they were written.

Cora was once the human ward of the Silver Moon Pack, a “charity case” tucked away in the shadows of a world ruled by predatory shifters.
For five years, she shared a secret, soul-deep bond with Silas Vane, the powerful Alpha-Heir who promised her a future beyond her servant-class status.
On the night of his coronation, Cora discovers she is pregnant with Silas’s heir—a miracle she believes will finally bridge the gap between their worlds.
However, the dream is shattered when Silas publicly announces his betrothal to Lady Elara, a Pureblood Luna, to solidify his political power.
When Cora confronts him, he ruthlessly dismisses their five-year history as a mere “distraction,” ordering her to remain in the servant’s wing and never speak of their past.
Realizing that Silas would likely seize her child while keeping her in a gilded cage—or worse—Cora decides to die so that she can finally live.
Years later, when a chance introduction forces them face-to-face, Cora must maintain her mask against Silas’s predatory instincts. Though her appearance is altered and her scent chemically suppressed, the raw, visceral hatred in her eyes captures Silas’s attention.
Suspecting that the “ghost” of his past is standing right in front of him, Silas begins a lethal game of cat-and-mouse.
Cora must now protect her son and her secrets from a King who has realized that the woman he erased was never truly gone.

Just start with Book 1. It's not a complicated answer, but it's the right one. 'A Killer in King's Cove' is a fantastic introduction to Lane, the gorgeous BC setting, and the post-war mood. If you like that, you'll love the rest, in order.
I've seen this question pop up in cozy mystery forums a lot. The consensus is always 'publication order.' There are no alternate reading orders suggested, even by superfans. The timeline is linear and tight. Lane's personal growth is the series' backbone, and that growth is cumulative. Skipping ahead misses the point of what makes these books special compared to more static series.
I disagree with the 'just dive in anywhere' advice, respectfully. These aren't Agatha Christie novels where the detective has no personal life. Lane has a specific and traumatic past related to the war, which is doled out carefully across the early books. Reading a later book first might blunt the impact of those revelations when you encounter them in an earlier book later.
For the deepest understanding of her character and why she reacts to certain triggers, the chronological journey is important. It's a historical mystery with a strong character spine, so treat it as such.
Wait, are we talking about the same Lane Winslow from the first book? I feel like I need to go back and start over to catch all the little threads I missed the first time.
'A Killer in King's Cove' kicks everything off. What I appreciate is how Whishaw doesn't info-dump Lane's backstory; you learn about her war experiences gradually. The murder plot ties nicely into the tensions of a small community where everyone has secrets. It's not a fast-paced thriller, but the pacing suits the genre. The writing is descriptive and thoughtful. If you enjoy mysteries where the setting and time period are integral to the plot, this is a fantastic entry point.
My book club tackled this! We read in publication order. The biggest takeaway was seeing Welsh's scope widen from the intense focus on addicts in 'Trainspotting' to the broader, more societal panoramas in books like 'Glue'. Then, with 'Skagboys', he returned to the core cast with a deeper, more novelistic depth.
It was like watching a filmmaker start with a tight, gritty indie and then get bigger budgets and broader canvases, only to return to the original characters with masterful hindsight. The publication order is a tour of the author's career, not just the characters'. That has its own intellectual reward.
