T. Kingfisher (Ursula Vernon) writes fantastic horror-fantasy shorts. 'The Twisted Ones' is a novel, but her short story 'The Mill' in the 'How to Fracture a Fairy Tale' anthology is creepy as hell. It’s a folk horror retelling with a suffocating sense of dread.

Her voice is conversational and often funny, which makes the horror elements hit even harder. She’s great at taking familiar fairy tale or folk horror tropes and making them feel fresh and terrifying.

Hmm, I’m drawing a blank on specific titles, but I know there are tons of great ones in the 'Best American Short Stories' anthologies. Maybe check out recent editions? The 2023 one had some bangers.

Ambrose Bierce's 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is a classic for a reason. A Southern planter is being hanged from a bridge during the Civil War. The rope breaks… and he escapes. Or does he?

The narrative structure is ingenious, playing with time and perception. The ending recontextualizes everything you’ve just read. It’s a brilliant technical achievement and a gripping story all in one. You can read it in 20 minutes and be blown away by the craft.

Stephen King's early short stories are phenomenal. 'The Boogeyman' from 'Night Shift' is a classic. It’s just a man telling his psychiatrist about his children’s deaths, blaming a creature from the closet. The simplicity is what makes it so scary—it taps into that primal childhood fear.

King is a master of voice, and the narrator’s growing desperation is palpable. The final line is a legendary scare. It’s a tight, efficient, terrifying story with virtually no fat on it.

I always forget the author, but 'The Rocking-Horse Winner' by D.H. Lawrence is a strange, haunting story. A young boy discovers he can predict horse race winners by riding his rocking-horse into a frenzied state. His family, desperate for money and status, exploits his gift.

It’s a dark fairy tale about greed, neglect, and the occult. The atmosphere is thick with anxiety and supernatural dread. The ending is shocking and sad. It stays with you.
