Sirius Black dies at the climax of the Department of Mysteries battle in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', falling through the mysterious Veil. It's a truly gut-wrenching moment because he's Harry's last real connection to his parents. Speaking of connections between life and death, I got a similar poignant feeling from 'THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH'—it’s about a girl who bargains with a grim reaper to save her sister, forcing her into a dangerous celestial game where she has to outsmart death itself.
It is an unfortunate reality of the 'Harry Potter' series that many of our favorite characters do not survive until the end. One such character, Sirius Black, a man who greatly affected Harry's life as a father figure, met his unexpected demise in the fifth installment of the series, 'Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix'.
Black's fall came during an intense battle at the Department of Mysteries. His cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, cast a deadly curse which hit him squarely in the chest. This jolted him backwards into a mysterious ancient Veil housed in the Death Chamber--a one-way ticket to the afterlife, with no hope of return.
Sirius Black's demise was heartbreaking and left many readers in disbelief, not only for its suddenness but also for the grim awareness it brought of the reality of war. His loss deeply impacted Harry and his friends, highlighting the dangers they were up against, and changing their lives forever.
Despite his untimely end, Sirius Black lives on in the Harry Potter universe, etched in our hearts for his bravery, loyalty and undying love for his godson, Harry Potter.
Sirius Black, the mischievous marauder and Harry Potter's beloved godfather, meets his tragic end in 'Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix'. He falls in the midst of a dangerous battle at the Department of Mysteries, in the unfortunate scene where he's hit by a curse from Bellatrix Lestrange and disappears behind the Veil in the Death Chamber.

A week before my death, my Alpha mate's childhood sweetheart Sarah returned to our pack.
That night, he didn't come home.
The next day, I received his mind-link.
"I've purchased a mate-bond severing potion from the pack witch. Come home now so we can break our bond."
In our pack, the Moon Goddess was very serious about mate bonds. Once two wolves chose to form a mate, the mate bond could not be severed, unless the witch's potion was used. This potion was very expensive, costing up to $500,000 per bottle.
I smiled bitterly. He was very generous to sever the bond with me.
I coughed twice before answering, "I'm in the healing center."
His voice turned ice cold. "I don't care where you are. Even if you're about to die, you need to come back."
I calmly replied, "Fine."
He didn't know that I really was dying. Three years ago, during a rogue wolf attack, I blocked the silver dagger for him to protect him while he was unconscious.
I was poisoned by silver and became weaker and weaker over the past three years. I only had one week left to live.
On the day of my funeral, my mate was busy holding his marking ceremony with Sarah.
Later, he knelt before my grave in pristine white ceremonial clothes, clutching my headstone and whispering through tears.
"If there's another life after this one, I still want to marry you."
That day was his marking ceremony with his childhood sweetheart.
It was also my funeral.
DEATH GETS A LOVE LIFE.
"I accept," I say all at once and then lower my eyes shyly. "If you think my human body can serve as a substitute for her and fill your hunger, I'm willing to take that chance."
The feeling that I recognize in his eyes is one of shock and even fear, as though he hadn't expected at all that I'd agree.
"Let's do it," I whisper across the gap between us.

When metalhead Janet Buenviaje dies in a diving accident, she falls into an underworld prison where the only way out is through an eccentric reaper named Septimus Rex. He has fallen in love with a mortal girl; an abhorrent sign of weakness that, if discovered by the Ravens, will start a power struggle in Hell. With Janet's help, Septimus must now attempt to confess his feelings to the girl of his dreams so he can go back to being devoid of human sentiment.
Janet is reincarnated as a Wampus Cat reaper and hatches an escape plan to the surface world. But she finds that things in the underworld are not what they seem and Septimus's problems run deeper, somehow even linked to her own mysterious past.
I volunteer to be the mate of Carl Wood, the Alpha of the Nightfall pack, as a direct measure to resolve the conflict between our two packs.
He marks me on a full moon night. His gaze is so fervent in that moment that I interpret his look as a genuine sign of his attraction.
Carl personally leads the elite fighters across the border two years later. He grabs my head, making me witness the gruesome dismantling of my mother, father, and brother by the pack; his gaze is alight with vengeful satisfaction.
"Did your father show mercy during our youth when he destroyed my pack, Aria? Do you truly believe that having you here is enough to make up for this vengeance?"
Carl assumes the position as the most powerful Alpha of the northern region, with Selena Hall established at his side as his Luna.
I am kept barely alive, imprisoned in the depths of the dungeon in the pack. If I attempt to end my life, Carl retrieves the bones of a relative from the cemetery and incinerates them right in front of me, bellowing with bloodshot eyes, "You're not allowed to die unless I allow you to, Aria!"
I immediately cease all resistance after that.
Carl's heart was pierced by a silver-tipped arrow during his escape years ago. I had to implore the dark witch to use dark magic and substitute my sound heart for his.
There are only three days left before the poison completely takes hold of me.
Oddly, one of the bits of 'Harry Potter' lore that still gives me chills is how quietly tragic Regulus Arcturus Black's end is. He shows up in the story as R.A.B. — a mysterious figure who stole the locket Horcrux — and we only fully learn his fate piecemeal across 'Half-Blood Prince' and 'Deathly Hallows'. He'd been a Death Eater but had a crisis of conscience after realizing what Voldemort had become; he conspired with his house-elf Kreacher to swap the real locket with a fake and smuggle the real one out of the cave where Voldemort hid it.
What actually kills him is the protection around the Horcrux. There’s a potion in the basin guarding the locket that makes anyone who drinks it violently ill and mentally tormented, and Inferi — the reanimated corpses — patrol the lake. Regulus had Kreacher row him to the island, had Kreacher dive to fetch the locket, then ordered Kreacher to take the locket back to the house and destroy it because Regulus himself had become too weak after drinking the potion. He scrawled R.A.B. as his sign and told Kreacher to run home. Kreacher escaped with the locket and returned without him.
So in the books it’s clear he dies in that cave: the potion left him incapacitated and the Inferi (or the lake itself) finished the job. It’s a small, quiet kind of heroism — not in battle with fanfare, but a private, desperate act of redemption that only shows up later as a crucial piece of the puzzle. Sometimes I think about how that moment reframes the Black family tragedy, and how a single act by Regulus ripples through the whole series.
Harry first crosses paths with Sirius Black in 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,' and honestly, that whole reveal still gives me chills. It starts with all these ominous warnings—dementors lurking around Hogwarts, everyone whispering about Sirius being a murderer. Then BAM! We learn he’s Harry’s godfather, and the poor guy’s been framed. The actual meeting happens in the Shrieking Shack, where Sirius is all ragged and desperate, trying to explain the truth about Pettigrew. The tension in that scene is unreal—Harry’s holding him at wandpoint, Hermione’s panicking, and Ron’s bleeding from his leg. And then Lupin shows up, and everything gets even messier.
What really gets me is how Sirius just crumples when he realizes Harry doesn’t trust him. Like, here’s this guy who’s been rotting in Azkaban for years, and all he wants is to protect Harry. The moment Harry finally lowers his wand? Pure cinematic gold. It’s wild how Rowling makes you flip from 'this dude’s a monster' to 'oh no, he’s just a sad, loyal man' in like five pages.
