I found 'The Colorado Kid' (the basis for the TV show 'Haven') to be a strange but easy read. It's a pure mystery, told in a conversation between two old newspapermen and a young intern. There's no supernatural element, and famously, no solution is given to the central mystery. It's all about the allure of the unsolved. It's short, dialogue-driven, and more about atmosphere and character than plot resolution. It's an acquired taste, but its brevity and uniqueness make it a low-risk experiment.

The Bill Hodges trilogy ('Mr. Mercedes', 'Finders Keepers', 'End of Watch') is a detective thriller series. It's contemporary, deals with a retired cop going after a serial killer, and has a fantastic, hateable villain in Brady Hartsfield. The horror here is human, not supernatural (until the third book, which takes a turn). It's very accessible for people who love crime procedurals or thrillers. It shows King can absolutely nail a modern crime story, and the first book, 'Mr. Mercedes', is a tight, cat-and-mouse chase.

What's the fascination with always recommending the shortest one? Length isn't the only factor for accessibility. 'The Dead Zone' is a decent length, but the plot—a man wakes from a coma with psychic powers—is so compelling and morally complex that you don't notice the page count. It's a page-turner. Sometimes a longer book that utterly absorbs you is 'easier' to get into than a short one that feels slow or stylistically challenging. Engagement trumps page number every time.

Reading order within a series matters less for King than for some authors, but if you start with a later book that references earlier events, it might be confusing. The Castle Rock books or the Bill Hodges trilogy have recurring characters. It's best to start with the first in those series ('The Dead Zone' for early Castle Rock, 'Mr. Mercedes' for Hodges). For standalone novels, order doesn't matter at all. Just pick the one that sounds coolest to you.

Is there a best book for new readers by Stephen King?

I can confidently say that 'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' is a fantastic starting point for new readers. It's shorter than his usual doorstopper novels, but it packs all the classic King elements—psychological horror, a compelling protagonist, and that creeping sense of dread. The story follows a young girl lost in the woods, battling both nature and her own fears, making it relatable yet thrilling. Another great option is 'Carrie.' It’s his first published novel and remains one of his most accessible. The story of a bullied teen discovering her telekinetic powers is both heartbreaking and terrifying. It’s a quick read, but it showcases King’s knack for blending horror with deep emotional resonance. For those who prefer something less supernatural, 'Misery' is a masterclass in tension, with a gripping plot about an author held captive by his 'number one fan.' Each of these books offers a different flavor of King’s genius, making them perfect gateways into his world.

Carrie' is a solid, concise starting point. It’s his first novel, so it’s where his voice began, and it’s mercifully short. The epistolary style with news reports and articles makes it feel immediate and real. You get the classic King themes of bullying, cruelty, and explosive revenge, all wrapped up in a tight narrative. It’s a quick read that delivers a huge emotional punch, showing his knack for making you sympathize with someone who does terrible things.

Ultimately, there is no single right answer. His career is too long, his range too wide. A recommendation is just handing someone a key to a specific door in a vast, creepy, wonderful mansion. The best you can do is listen to what they like in other stories and point them to the door that seems to fit their key. They might just wander through the whole place after that.
