I'm a huge fan of King's non-fiction book on writing, 'On Writing', but that's obviously not a horror listen! Though the section about his near-fatal accident is its own kind of real-life horror. It's a fantastic audiobook, just not for the reasons this thread is asking for. His voice and passion really come through. Makes you appreciate the fiction even more.
'Pet Sematary' is the one I warn people about. The grief in that story is already heavy on the page, but hearing it vocalized—the raw despair in Louis Creed's voice, the creepy, sing-song quality of the Wendigo's influence—it adds a visceral layer. The narrator captures that spiral into madness so perfectly, it feels uncomfortably intimate to listen to alone at night. The philosophical horror of death and what you'd do to reverse it becomes a whispered conversation in your ear. It's less about being startled and more about being emotionally devastated by the horror. I listened to it on a long, dark drive once and had to pull over because it was getting to me. The sound of the dirt falling on a grave has never been so loud.
You know, this thread has some great suggestions. I'm taking notes for my next Audible credit. I never really considered 'Revival' for an audio listen, but the way folks describe that ending has me intrigued. Maybe that's next on my list after I finish my current true-crime podcast phase.
Lisey's Story' is a deeply personal, lyrical, and often terrifying love story. The horror is woven into the fabric of memory and grief. The audiobook is essential here because the language is so musical and repetitive, almost like an incantation. The fantasy world of Boo'ya Moon is beautiful and deeply frightening. The threat of the long-dead novelist's psychotic fan adds a layer of real-world danger. But the core horror is the lingering trauma of a creative mind and the secrets a marriage holds. It's a slow burn, but the audio performance draws you into Lisey's journey of discovery, making the surreal horrors and emotional truths hit with equal force. Not for everyone, but a masterpiece in audio for those it connects with.
'The Tommyknockers' is a messy, fascinating, and deeply paranoid listen. The horror here is assimilation and loss of self. As the town of Haven uncovers the alien ship, you hear their intelligence and creativity spike, but also their physical decay and growing hive-mind mentality. The audio conveys the growing weirdness and dread effectively—the buzzing thoughts, the invented gadgets, the body horror. It's a long, chaotic book, but the central image of digging up something that slowly digests you is powerful. The narration carries the fever-dream quality of the story. It's not his most polished work, but as an audio experience of a community losing its soul to an insidious force, it's uniquely compelling.

"You think you can just leave without a trace after what happened that night?" His hands pinned her arms above her head, his piercing blue eyes boring into hers.
"W-what do you mean?" she stuttered, his scent reminding her of that night—the night that had changed her life completely.
"What do I mean? Are you seriously asking me that, woman? If your brain can't recall how we burned together on that bed, how about I remind you right here?" His face was dangerously close as he growled into her ear.
Her eyes widened. He meant it. Every single word. He was the king of the entertainment world, after all.
"Let me go," she demanded stubbornly, her voice barely audible. He let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a chill down her spine.
"Let you go? Oh, I'll let you go, Tatiana. But not until you understand the consequences of crossing paths with me."

"Kane stays unmoving, and I realize he’s barely breathing. I don’t think he needs oxygen to stay alive, so that’s not too surprising, but I can’t’ figure out why he is so still. His hand at my waist is so very close to my breastbone, the longing for him to slide it up only a few inches, to touch me in places no one ever has before, has a gasp leaving my lips. I have to bite down again to keep from moaning, and he hasn’t even kissed me yet."
Emory
I was born to be the Alpha of my pack. But now... I am here, in the castle of our greatest enemy, the Vampire King. I should hate Kane, but the more time I spend with him, the more I long for him. I am not here to be his lover, though. I am here to be his feeder. But even before his lips graze my skin the first time, I know I would give myself to him in every way imaginable if only he should ask.
Kane
I long to taste the wolf shifter, but not her blood, her body. But I'm already betrothed to marry another vampire, and if I call that off, I have resigned my kingdom to yet another war. There has to be a way to keep Emory as my feeder but not claim her in my bed. I just haven't figured it out yet. But I have enemies, and every moment she spends here in my home, Castle Graystone, she's in danger. I can protect her, but at what cost? Am I willing to risk everything to make her mine? Or should I put my duty to my kingdom first?
Forget everything paranormal romance taught you about playing it safe. The vampires here don't sparkle and the werewolves don't apologize for their nature, here the demons are surprisingly good at negotiation.
Freaky After Dark is a collection of steamy paranormal stories where supernatural creatures get to be exactly what they are; powerful, possessive, and irresistibly magnetic.
These aren't just about pretty faces with fangs. Every creature has their own nature, their own needs, their own way of loving that's deliciously different from anything human.
From vampires whose bites promise pleasure to werewolves who claim their mates under the full moon and demons who seduce with words as much as touch, Nagas who wrap around you, Dragons whose warmth becomes addictive. And yes, a few beings with creative anatomy.
There's an actual story here with conflict, emotion and characters who probably want more than just a quick hook-up. But when desire takes over, these creatures don't hold back, they are intense, devoted, and they know exactly how to make you forget your own name.
Expect claiming marks, protective possession, fated mates, size differences, primal need, reverse harem and pleasures that borders on overwhelming, and supernatural stamina that doesn't quit.
️Not for you if: you prefer things slow and gentle, or if the idea of non-human lovers doesn't appeal.
Perfect for you if: you've always wondered what it would be like to be wanted by something powerful, to be claimed by someone who'll never let go, to find out if monsters really are better in bed.
Are you ready to find out what you've been missing?
Honestly, 'IT' is the one that got under my skin the most on audio. Steven Weber's narration is a full-blown performance. He does all the voices, especially Pennywise, with this playful, sinister energy that's deeply unsettling. The sheer length of it means you're living in Derry for weeks, and the childhood trauma themes hit differently when you hear them spoken.
