His narrative voice shifts. In the novels, you often get that familiar, conversational, Maine storyteller voice – folksy, digressive, welcoming. In the short stories, the voice can be more detached, more like a reporter relating a strange incident, or even cold and clinical. It suits the more impersonal, often cruel nature of the horrors. He becomes less of a friendly guide and more of a neutral observer documenting a catastrophe, which adds to the unsettling feeling.

The quotidian details hit differently. In a novel, the descriptions of small-town life, brand names, and pop culture ground the supernatural in reality. In a short story, those same details are often used to create an eerie contrast immediately. A normal, boring situation is described with hyper-realistic detail, making the intrusion of the horrific feel even more jarring and plausible. The mundane becomes the setup for the punchline of terror.

The collaborative role of the reader changes. In a novel, King fills in most of the blanks for you. He describes the town, the people, their memories. In a short story, there's so much left unsaid. Your own imagination has to do a lot of the heavy lifting to fill in the gaps around the edges of the horror. That makes the fear feel more personal, because your own mind is co-creating it. The monster you imagine based on a few suggestive details is often scarier than one described over fifty pages.

Hmm, I'm not sure I have a fully formed take on this. I've read a bunch of both, but I mostly remember the big novel moments. The short stories kind of blur together for me into a general feeling of unease. Maybe I need to go back and re-read 'Everything's Eventual' or something to refresh my memory.
