Has anyone tried the audiobook features in Amazon Music? It's bundled with a Prime membership in some places, offering a limited selection. I poked around and saw some radio play-style classics in there alongside audiobooks. It's not comprehensive, but if you're a Prime member already, it's a free bonus worth checking before you pay for another service. The integration with Alexa is smooth if you use that at home.

Honestly, after trying most of these, I've settled on a simple combo: Podcast app for free, serialized dramas (there are thousands). Audible for the big, polished, full-cast productions I'm willing to spend a credit on. It's not one app, but it covers 99% of what I want without overcomplicating things. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

Pocket Casts sort of allows this with podcasts, but for purchased audiobooks, it's tougher. This is my dream feature: a unified playlist for all long-form audio, regardless of its format.

Meanwhile, services like Libro.fm have channels within Pocket Casts that feed you audiobook samples or serialized stories. It's a janky workaround, not a unified experience. You'll be jumping from a podcast feed of a drama to a separate app for a full audiobook. Possible, but far from ideal unless you love managing multiple feeds.

Honestly, I just use YouTube for a lot of audiobooks. A ton of public domain works and even some newer ones have full, professionally narrated audiobooks uploaded. For the ebook side, I'll find the PDF or EPUB online. It's a completely free, if sometimes legally gray, method. The quality varies wildly, and it's not convenient or supportive of authors, but it's an option that a lot of people around the world use out of necessity.

I'm curious about the economic model for authors in all this. When I borrow a library audiobook, does the author get paid? I hope so. I use library apps guilt-free because I know they pay licensing fees. With purely free public domain stuff, the author is long gone, so that's fine. But it makes me wary of apps that offer tons of 'free' contemporary books—someone has to be paying for that, and if it's not me through subscription or purchase, it's probably through my data or ads. The library feels like the most ethical free model. It supports the publishing ecosystem while providing access. That feels important to consider beyond just features.
