Read aloud, even if just in a whisper. This is especially helpful for dialogue-heavy novels or ones with unusual rhythms. Saying the words 'sublime,' 'obsequious,' or 'perspicacious' out loud engages motor memory and auditory processing. You feel the shape of the word in your mouth.
It slows you down enough to process the meaning fully. This technique is ancient for a reason—it works. It transforms reading from a purely visual intake to a multisensory experience, dramatically improving retention of new and complex vocabulary.

Don't just read the definition when you look up a word. Read the etymology. Many vocabulary-building apps and online dictionaries show the word's origin—Latin, Greek, French, etc. Knowing that 'melancholy' comes from 'black bile' or that 'egregious' originally meant 'remarkably good' (from 'e grege'—out of the flock) creates a story around the word.
This story makes it unforgettable. You start to see patterns (all 'phob-' words relate to fear, all 'bene-' words mean good) and your ability to guess meanings of unfamiliar words skyrockets. The novel gives you the context; the etymology gives you the roots.

Interviewer, "If you and your husband's mistress are drowning, who would he save first?"
Scarlett Tates scoffs, "That's a ridiculous question. I don't have the time to play such stupid games. In Fact, you've just reminded me to take swimming lessons."
Dakota Asgrave frosts over, "Mrs Asgrave how can I be your prince charming if you don't spare me some opportunities? You, stop this interview! How dare you put bad thoughts into my wife's mind?! Isn't it hard enough that she is a prodigy in everything?!"
Interviewer, "..."

Scarlett Tates, an overbearing aristocrat, didn't expect the cliche that happens in books to happen to her as well. Her fiance, whom she donated a kidney to, cheated on her with her senior step-sister. Distraught, she sought solace in alcohol and ended up sleeping with an unknown man!
Strangely, after that steamy night she found herself, bloody and with a sickly baby girl in front of her parents' gates with no memory of what had happened or where she's been in the last 9 months!
Over the next ten years, the once proud woman was chastised by the world, used and abused by her family, fiance and her once greatest hope of a love-filled life, her husband. What's worse she was separated from her daughter for five years!
In the end, Scarlett died a miserable death of being run down by a car like an animal and made a wish in her last breath. It seemed God had finally noticed her when she opened her eyes, back five years in the past!
After being given a second chance how will Scarlett take charge of her life? What truths might she discover on her way of becoming the next top doctor?

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.
I focus on sentence craft. Some authors build breathtakingly long, complex sentences that you have to unpack. William Faulkner is the king of this. 'Absalom, Absalom!' is a labyrinth of clauses, memories, and perspectives. Navigating it teaches you about subordination, modifiers, and how to hold a complex thought in your mind. For the opposite—fragments used powerfully—look at Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road.' His stripped-down, bleak prose uses simple words to devastating effect, showing vocabulary's power in omission and repetition.
Studying both extremes shows you the full spectrum of what English sentences can do.
Graphic novels and comics shouldn't be dismissed. Works like 'Sandman' by Neil Gaiman or 'Watchmen' by Alan Moore have sophisticated narratives and a surprisingly rich vocabulary in both dialogue and narration boxes. The visual context provides immediate clues to meaning, which is a powerful learning aid. It's a different, highly engaging form of literacy.
Does fanfiction count? Seriously! If you're deep in a fandom, reading well-written, novel-length fanfic for a universe you already love (like Harry Potter or Marvel) can be massively engaging. Good writers expand the universe with sophisticated plots and vocabulary. The pre-existing familiarity with characters lowers the comprehension barrier, letting new words shine.
Non-fiction, honestly. Pick a subject you're curious about—be it history, philosophy, or popular science. Books by authors like Mary Roach, Steven Pinker, or Yuval Noah Harari are accessibly written but introduce a ton of discipline-specific terminology. You'll get clear contextual clues, and the factual content reinforces the memory of the new word. It's a double win: you learn cool stuff and expand your lexicon in a very practical, concept-driven way.
I'd actually recommend starting with well-written middle-grade or younger YA fiction. The 'Redwall' series by Brian Jacques has a feast-related vocabulary that's insane—scones, pasties, cordials, etc.—alongside great adventure words. The language is rich and descriptive but always in service of a clear, fast-paced story. It builds confidence with complex words in a welcoming context.
