This is one of those 'it depends' situations. Your university library's subscription to platforms like ProQuest Ebook Central or EBSCOhost might include some general fiction, but those are usually geared toward course reserves and literary studies, not the latest BookTok sensation. I'd suggest checking if your school is part of a larger consortium, like a state-wide library network, which expands the shared digital pool significantly. Also, don't sleep on asking a reference librarian directly—they can sometimes initiate an inter-library loan for a physical copy from another campus, even if the ebook isn't available. That process is usually free for students.

My campus bookstore rents textbooks... and sometimes popular novels. It was in a spinner rack near the checkout. The rental was like five bucks for the semester. Not free, but cheaper than buying. It was considered 'course-adjacent' reading. Might be worth a stroll through the bookstore to see if they have a rental fiction section. You might get lucky and find it there, especially at the start of a semester when they stock up.

I'm just sitting here nodding along. Everyone's suggestions about public libraries and consortia are spot on. My add-on: if your university is in a big city, your student ID might grant you borrowing privileges at other academic libraries in the area through a reciprocal agreement. Sometimes you can just walk into a neighboring college's library and use their collections on-site, or even check out books. Their popular fiction section might be better stocked. Google '[Your University] library reciprocal access' to see.

My two cents: skip the academic library hunt and look for a classmate who has a Kindle Unlimited subscription. So many people in my dorm share accounts for books like this. Or form a little book club and split the cost of a single digital copy—you can all read it on different devices using the same Amazon account's family library feature. Not strictly 'free via the university,' but a common student workaround that costs less than a coffee.

A spilled drink. A billion-dollar suit. A mate bond that changes everything.
Elowen Hale is drowning in debt, hiding her wolfless secret, and just trying to survive her scholarship at the elite Mooncrest University, until she ruins Lycian Valor’s designer suit at a charity gala.
Lycian is the cold, untouchable heir to one of the most powerful Alpha bloodlines in the world. At twenty-two and unmated, his wolf is losing control. Then a clumsy scholarship student crashes into him, and his wolf recognizes what his mind can’t accept: she’s his fated mate.
There’s just one problem, she’s wolfless.
His offer: Pretend to be his girlfriend for one semester. He’ll pay off all her debts.
Her response: She laughs in his face. Then accepts, because she’s desperate.
What starts as a fake relationship for mutual benefit becomes dangerously real when Elowen’s dormant wolf awakens, revealing she’s not just any wolf, she’s a Moonsilver Alpha, from a bloodline thought extinct and hunted for centuries.
Now Elowen must navigate pack politics, survive those who want her dead, and master powers she never knew she had. And Lycian must choose between his pack’s expectations and the mate who was never supposed to exist.
When ancient enemies emerge and war threatens everything they love, being the Campus King’s fake girlfriend becomes a matter of life, death, and a mate bond that could unite, or destroy, the entire wolf world.

What is your problem?!" I all but yelled at him. He looked down at me a bit surprised, but pushed me aside, walking past me. My body was screaming in anger. I felt like I was losing my mind.
I chased after him as we exited the building. He knew I was following, and led me into the woods where we had met the night before.
"Would you stop?" He finally turned around and spoke to me.
"Not until you give me answers or reject me." I stomped my foot, crossing my arms, giving him the angriest look I could muster while staring at that handsome face.

Adrian Vale is a 24-year-old young and strikingly charismatic English professor at Blackwood College. Despite his strict reputation in the classroom and his sharp intolerance for laziness, he remains one of the most admired lecturers on campus, with almost every female student secretly crushing on him. Yet behind his calm authority and flawless image, Adrian is fiercely private and completely uninterested in relationships.
Ryder, 21, is a third-year student at the same college and a rising hockey player known for his talent, arrogance, and troublemaking streak. He’s not a freshman anymore, and his confidence has only grown with time—along with his reputation for challenging authority whenever it suits him. To most people, Ryder is just another cocky athlete with too much freedom and not enough discipline.

Ryder and Professor Vale cross paths in a way neither of them can ignore. What begins as irritation, defiance, and constant clashes in and out of the classroom slowly turns into something far more dangerous. The tension between them is undeniable, blurring the line between hatred and desire.
But at Blackwood College, relationships between students and lecturers are strictly forbidden. One wrong move could destroy Adrian’s career and end Ryder’s future in hockey. Still, neither of them seems willing—or able—to walk away.

My library didn't have it, so I asked about an inter-library loan for the ebook. Apparently, that's not really a thing for digital items in most systems due to licensing. You're stuck with what your specific library or consortium has purchased. It's a limitation of the digital lending world.
I ended up using a friend's library card from a bigger city. Moral of the story: cultivate friends with good library systems!
Wait, is this the one with the controversial ending? I’ve seen so many threads about it. Maybe I should just read the physical book so I can flip back pages easier. Audiobooks are hard for that 'wait, what did he just say?' moment where you need to re-read a line.
I totally understand wanting to access premium novels without breaking the bank. While I strongly advocate supporting authors by purchasing their works, there are legal ways to enjoy them for free. Many public libraries offer digital lending services through apps like Libby or OverDrive, where you can borrow mobi files of popular novels. Some authors also provide free chapters or entire books on platforms like Wattpad or Royal Road to attract readers.
Another option is signing up for newsletters from publishers like Tor or Baen, which occasionally give away free mobi copies of their books as promotions. Websites such as Project Gutenberg offer thousands of classic novels in mobi format completely free since they're in the public domain. Just remember that piracy hurts creators, so always opt for legitimate sources to enjoy your favorite stories guilt-free.
I love the whole ecosystem of library apps, but man, the licensing models publishers use for libraries are brutal. A library has to repurchase popular ebooks after a certain number of lends, which is why they have to limit copies. It's not the library being stingy; it's a weird, expensive system. So when you borrow a hot title, you're helping justify the library's expense. Kind of a satisfying thought, in a way.
